I have been reading this forum for a few days. I am looking at using a NookColor as a tablet device. Yesterday I went to BestBuy (B&N is a 200 mi round trip) to check out the device. The sales person told me that the NookColor WiFi only works with B&N instore wifi. That dosen't fit with what I've read here, so i wanted to see what you all have experianced. Will it work at hot spots and home networks? Does it need to be rooted to do that?
From what I have read the update to 2.2 and flash will make this device a perfect android tablet/slate.
Thanks
chuck

you may find that wifi on costs battery life. ez to toggle it on when you need, and off when upi dpn't

That's good advice. Battery life isn't all that great. Contrary to what B&N claims, it will charge when connected to your computer with USB (although it is probably slower).

I will also confirm that it works on any wi-fi you can connect to. I use mine just great at home on my network.

Also, others have been told that you can only go to Barnes and Noble website on the Nook Color. Not true....I surf all my favorite sites on the Nook!

I can't wait for the OTA update to happen!!!!

Thanks for all the replys everyone.
Roberto: You answered another question I had, will it trickle charge using USB. Thank you.
I haven't bought one yet, but I'm also looking forward to the OTA update.
I use a Kindle for reading (don't hate me ;) and this will be used as a tablet/slate. It's small enough to fit in my camera bag and seems to be just as usable as the more expensive android tablets. I'm getting pretty pumped.

I'd be telling the store manager his employee needs some retraining.

I use my wife's kindle for reading when i can get my hands on it, otherwise I use the kindle app on the NC

Battery life is actually quite good if you use the stock rom or root base off the stock rom using something like autonooter. However, if you use a custom rom such as CM7 the battery like isn't very good as they have not yet fixed the sleep functiinality in the custom roms.

I bought the NC 4 days ago and tried using CM7 on an SD card, but found it to be lacking, including battery life, so I'm waiting for the update. Then, if I can't run the apps I want, I will stock root it to get superuser. I was surprised that stock the NC is already a pretty useful tablet.

Hopefully the update will get rooted quickly as I find that lack of flash frustrating. Cm7 does not load for some reason on mine. All I get is an installation aborted. Stuck with rooted stock.

The store employee was not entirely wrong, probably just not good at explaining things. There is exclusive content available for your Nook only while on B&N wifi. I think you get up to an hour a day to read anything, even if it's a paid book (not just the sample chapter). There is also a rotating selection of short stories and essays and such that you can only get while on their wifi. So, yes, it will work on any wifi, but there are exclusive opportunities if you get online at the store. That may be what they were talking about.

only if you use the nook usb cable. a regular micro usb cord doesnt work to charge the nook, though it will work for data transfers.

Incorrect, I have charged my NookColor using the MircoUSB cable that came with my Samsung Captivate. I did not fully charge it, but I went from about 21% remaining to 40% using my phones charger. I was not using the nook at the time, screen was off and it was just sitting there charging. It's much slower than the nookcharger but it will slowly charge.
