Not a big fan of the new lift to wake change in 10

I really liked the lift to wake setup with Android 9 on my original pixel. When you lifted it, it would just show the notifications, time and weather, battery percentage etc on a black background, you'd have to double tap the screen or push the power button to bring up the lock screen..... it took an extra step to get to the unlock screen but it was super easy on the battery.

With 10 they've seemed to have made the gyroscope sensor super sensitive, plus you now get the full lock screen/home screen image showing up every time you make the slightest movement with the phone in your hand, which basically means the screen is on the majority of the time I'm holding my phone, whether I'm using it or not. I get that they wanted to skip a step by having it go directly to the lock screen, but this new "feature" is really cutting into my battery life. I really like the lift to wake feature, but I think I'm going to have to turn it off and just use the double tap and power button to wake the screen up.

I wish they would have left the black screen with all the notifications etc instead of lighting the whole screen up with your wallpaper every time you just want to look at your notifications. Maybe there's a setting I can change for that.

I had to go look. I have lift to wake turned off. My fingerprint is what wakes my phone and I don't pick it up without having my finger on, or very hear, the scanner.

never liked lift to wake as it always seems to erratic on my pixel 2, so I'm fine using the double tap

I try my hardest to love lift to wake feature of my pixel. Problem is it wakes the lock screen always in my pocket because it's thinks that's being lifted by me walking. Lol.

Yep, that's a big reason I quit using it

Haha yeah I mean trust me, the idea sounds great either double tap to wake or lift away just yours. However, The phone always thinks by the proximity sensor that it's been lifted to wake. so whenever I want to see more detailed info of my notifications I just highlight my lock screen quickly versus my always on ambient display.

It's like these phones are purposely trying to drive us mad....... I think it's the rise of the machines :O

This is my one complaint. It actually works great, but I'd prefer the home screen remain dark.

Not sure why it’s such a problem making lift to wake consistent, that other phone maker “cough” Apple has it down perfectly.

Eh, Who knows. Does anyone know how to disable the bubble notification shortcut for the phone dialer though? I went to apps And notifications then apps bubble notifications notifications phone dialer and turn it off. However whenever I'm on the phone and I swipe the phone call into the background I still get the bubble notification.

I'm not exactly sure what you are saying, but if you don't want to see the wallpaper on your lock screen, just turn it off.

Go to Settings -> Display -> Wallpaper and select a different image. At some point you will be asked "Home screen only" or "Home screen and lock screen". After setting it, do it again with your preferred wallpaper.

I don't see any way to change this setting without going through the process above.

FWIW, my Pixel 3XL needs to be lifted to a 45 deg angle before it lights up. And it needs to be lifted earpiece up, mouthpiece down. Nothing happens at all when lifted in any other direction.

Have you done this lately? Because I don't get any "Home screen only and lock screen" prompt following this method. It just changes the wallpaper and that's all.

Yes, I tried it before my last post and just tried it again. You *do* have to select a different wallpaper from whatever is current. Then, if you want, you can repeat the process to return to your original wallpaper.

Hmm... We're not getting the same prompts for whatever reason? Are you on a Pixel 3?

+1

It sounds like the solution to all of these complaints is to go to Settings>Display>Lock Screen Display and turn "Lift to check phone" Off. Just tested with it on and off, and it worked for me. Pixel 3XL for the record.

Well, that is odd.

I tested on my Pixel 3XL. One thing I may have forgot (and not sure if you tried it), you have to tap the "Set wallpaper" button before you will see the Home screen/Lock screen question.

That's the weirdest thing... As soon as I tap "set wallpaper" it immediately sets and just says "Wallpaper set successfully" and escorts me to the home page. Maan.. This is some of that 'Google Fu' at it's finest.

That is weird. Which phone are you working with?
