Not a DROID it is an ANDROID

In China, the term Android or Droid has no meaning. Chinese simply like to refer to Androids as G-Phones, or Google Phones.
Thats what I tell people. Its a Google phone and it runs ANDROID software.

I really dont think people are too lazy to say android and choose droid instead, I feel they are under-educated. I still run into people who are like yeah its a sprint hero its new out (:D) lol yeah this whole android thing came out a week ago

I am just dipping into the Android market and have been searching for the answer to this as well. I dont see why people get so upset though because they can never explain further why 2 phones running Android software can not both be refered to as Droids. All they say is one is a droid and it runs android software and the other simply runs android software and is not a Droid. ........ok some elaboration would be nice.
Is it just the fact that one is more Google based than another?

The thing that got me started on this was I was at VZW looking the phones over and I really like how the Samsung Fascinate looks. I like the nice screen, the pysical look of the phone, the way the software looks more polished and has more eye catching little things about it than the "Droids". But the VZW rep who had a Droid X kept hinting that what I really wanted was a true "DROID" but he never gave any concrete evidence why a real Droid was better than a phone running Android software. Sheesh WTF! to make matters worse I searched for a few days now and there is no where where the pros and cons are laid out comparing them.

Depends on the phone. The Droid Bionic is just as google based as the Atrix. Droid is just the name. Nothing that special except for having the name Droid. But the Nexus S is more google based than the Droid Bionic or the Atrix..... I think.

Thanks, the only real thing I have been able to find while researching why this guy was partial to true Droid is the fact that they are not loaded with as much extras as the other offerings from Samsung, LG etc, but am not sure why this is such as desired thing. Cant you just remove some of the stuff if you dont like it? What ARE some of the extras people dont want? I just think the Samsungs are more visually appealing almost like how the newer versions of windows (vista, 7) are more visually appealing than windows xp was. For me little touches to something can go a long ways.

Some of the "extras" people don't want are customized UIs like touchwiz or motorblur. The Nexus line, OG Droid, Motorola Xoom, and LG G-Slate are some devices that don't have those "extras" that some people don't want.

You all need better things to worry about.

The term Droid is becoming like the word Kleenex. A brand name that becomes synonymous with a class of products. It's s short catchy phrase. If you say droid to someone they know you are talking about a smartphone. If I was to say I have a Fascinate they would have no idea class of phone I had.

But with that said I do say that I have a Samsung Fascinate when asked. But if they look totally lost I would say It's a Droid. Not that it's a Samsung Galaxy S branded by Verizon as the Fascinate running the open source Android operating system from Google. My goal is not to educate anyone, but instead to foster comprehension from who I'm speaking to.

The rest of you should look up the term 'pedantic'

And yes we have Verizon marketing to thank for this generalization of the term Droid.

I have a Nexus One and too many times I was asked "is that Droid?"

Us non "Droid" owners can thank Verizon for embedding "Droid" in the psyche of it's customers and the general public.

Honestly it doesn't bother me. Droid is a branding which I am not opposed to, even though I know its not "correct." The Verizon "droid" commercials, and the original Droid, are really what made Android take off. And since Android is on so many types of devices, ranging from TV's to Microwaves to Phones, "Droid" seems like a good branding of the phone segment for the typical consumer.

Android needs to have a specific "branding" like the iPhone imo. Because there are so many devices, and so many look different, many consumers don't really know what it is. So if they remember "Droid" then I say let it be, as saying "no, actually this is a non-verizon android phone with a different processor and skin" will just confuse and irritate ;p. To me, its just semantics and not worth correcting people over.

You really can't blame Leo for that since he probably realized trying to explain the difference between Droid and Android to Regis would have been pointless. :-p

Well the Galaxy tab commercials and the Evo commercials are helping out because they both say "powered by Android"

Unfortunately I don't know how many people will still make the distinction. I've even heard a few people call them "Google phones"

:D

At least people refers to it as a "Droid" is better than mistaking a MileStone to a really old Samsung or Ericsson phone , I'm not kidding it happened with me more than 5 times , even by Tech lovers (who have no Idea what Android Is)
Only foiur (one of them actually got confused about Android & Droid thanks to GSMarena which they refers to every single Android phone as a Droid) of my family , relatives & friends that actually knows something about Android (Which Is Android is a new platform competing against iPhone & BlackBerry)
