Not able to cut text in a text message on Galaxy S6, why?

Not able to cut text in a text message on Galaxy S6

After I highlight text in a message, I cannot get the cut icon to appear if I am highlighting the entire message.I used to be able to do this but it stopped working. Also, when I click the icon for emojis it changes color but does not display them.
