not impressed with DL30

ODIN has gotten a workout today. I'm trying one last time to see if my nandroid will restore properly before i just start all over with DL09 and wait for an official release, a fully working CM6 or JT's ASOP.

Make sure you restore whatever kernel you were using when you restore your nandroid.

If you upp'd to DL30, you will need to restore your nandroid, then re-flash whatever kernel you were running when you made your nandroid backup. If you aren't sure, then yeah you might be stuck rebuilding from scratch.

1. Voodoo largely improves write operations only. Moving around the UI doesn't really gain much if anything from voodoo.
2. yes our devs are awesome, no question about that. Please don't confuse comments about the quality of the software with comments about the quality of the devs. I'm glad they leaked DL30. I'm glad that we were able to play with it, but i'm not at all impressed with the quality of this software. If someone is looking for it to be the end all, or OMG FROYOS! like some of the posts around here, this might serve as a reality check.

i understand what voodoo does. i do notice that my phone runs smother all around on a voodoo kernel.

im sorry if i misunderstood your intent in posting. it just sounded like complaining to me. sorry.

Starting over from scratch right now. Even with the same kernel, etc, the Nandroid wasn't working correctly and gave me problems on every reboot.

At least i have the tools to fix it... i think :)

Maybe made a mistake in there as i was trying to get it finished before conference calls for work... but i think i may have to go all the way back to the uber fix all file.

I actually really like the DL30. However, I just rooted my phone last weekend so I'm comparing it to DL09 with a non-voodoo kernel. So far, it's definitely faster and my battery life is better. Also, Froyo adds a lot more to this phone than it did for my old Droid 1. That said, if I had been rooted for a while, was running a voodoo kernel, and was heavily reliant on exchange e-mail, I doubt that I would have flashed a new OS on the very day it was released and expected it to perform better than what I already had. After all, you're comparing apples to oranges. If you flashed back to a very basic 2.1 with all bloat installed, I think you would find that DL30 kicks it's a**. I would think that the OP's best option from the outset would have been to wait at least a week or two for some tweaked roms and kernels.

That's ALWAYS the best option!! ;)

It's fun to play, and thanks to a solid, tested Nandroid backup it's easy enough to do so without having to start over in case of a disaster.

But seriously, someone has to be the "bad guy" and say "hey this release isn't 100% - here are some of the bugs I've found in it." This is how testing works. If every forum was filled with nothing but "OMG FroYo is the best thing to ever happen to the world" we sure wouldn't get very far in fixing bugs and putting out better versions for release, eh?

true enough. i am over my man period. :p

i will say the battery life blows goats! im a looking forward to adyr doing whatever he knows how to do that sammy doesnt and throw out a kernel that lasts.

still. its a great deal better than 2.1 imo. i will just keep it charged as much as i can until better kernels are available. i seriously doubt i will ever flash a 2.1 rom again.

Agreed

I was willing to play because i believe that i am able to fix most of what i'd run into. This particular situation was compounded by my inattention and erroneous belief that the DJ09 Odin file would format and correctly overwrite a voodoo install. For some reason it didn't seem to work for me that way.

I had to go back to the HUGE odin fix all file that Adrynalyne provided. It looks like that fixed everything and i am now back up and running on DL09.

This was my whole point in starting the tread. People are going to be drawn to the new stuff because it's new, but there are some bugs in this one and most people are not warning users of these particular bugs. Ideally others should contribute bugs they've noticed so that we can give perspective users a clear picture of the upsides and downsides associated with this release.

Are we EXT4 with this kernel or are we back to RSF? If it's RSF then it will be a little slower still. So far I'm happy with this leaked version. I expect the developers will be tearing apart the kernel and getting us to a faster phone soon. I also wouldn't be surprised if there is another build just like we saw with DJ05 and DL09 before.

Stock

have a conference call for work right now, but my DL09 didn't restore quite as well as i'd like. Looks like i've got to wipe data and try again.

I keep booting into a set of home screens that are full of "problem loading widget" boxes.

my widgets never come back after restore i always get the problem loading...just delete widget and ad it back

I'm not sure what the complaint is. This is more polished than DL09 was, and that was released.

For me it's the ui speed issues combined with the exchange PIN/Password and syncing issues that pushed me back to DL09.

I wouldn't be shocked if this IS the final release. If it is i probably won't use it.

Adrynalyne, why don't you get on ROM Manager?

Because I don't feel like patronizing Koush, who is putting out half done projects and neglecting them. (Point in case, our clockwork recovery, and that Rom Manager is so flaky on our devices).

funny you should have that problem:

http://forum.androidcentral.com/ver...-roms-hacks/57336-problem-loading-widget.html

it has something to do with red. i liste a step by step on how i fixed it and got back to voodoo.

Yeah, i think i had some issues when i restored my nandroid that essentially led to this problem. I managed to get everything fixed and back to DL09 via odin to DI01, boot, odin to DL09. Then install the RED cwr from Odin, install DL09 + JT's voodoo 1/23 from the Red CWR and all is now well.

I think that the backup i made just before going to DL30 didn't play well when it restored, or i screwed it up the sequence.

Either way thanks again to Adrynalyne for putting together that cure all odin file way back when.

Re: 2.2.1 Asop email, maybe i'll give it a shot thanks for the file and the reminder (i used the asop email on the DINC), but I'm still concerned about the UI lags and pauses. I know you are an ADWex user, do you see similar issues?

No, Adw Ex seems the same for me On 2.2.1 as 2.1.

That's what i expected. On my DL30 install the screen transitions were just garbage. So much so that i restored to DL09 and reflashed DL30 just to see if i was doing something wrong on my end.

I know benchmarks are not the end all (except for epeen), but would you mind running smartbench and quadrant? Both programs show far lower scores on DL30 than DL09 + Jt's kernel. I'm sure some of it is due to voodoo and the memory management tweeks, but even on the games score in smartbench i'm down from about 2800 to around 1200, and watching the 3d tests chug and lag makes me think that there is something to those scores).

Thanks,
