Note 2: Battery Drain after 4.3 update

Re: Battery Drain after 4.3 update

Can you elaborate how did you do this? which software did you used for the "factory reset before use"? Because such opstion isn't on my note at all except for Settings>Accounts>BackUp and Restore>Factory Settings!!

I believe he was just giving a general statement of what he did, not the exact path on how to do it. You factory reset your device under backup and restore then download the update and install it and then factory reset again.

Fair enough.
But even so it doesn't makes sense. Everyone is in this thread is complaining about drain issues after installing 4.3. Now, even following the factory reset trough back up and restore there is no update...as it IS already installed. This is also confusing as some people here pointed at installing the firmware again.
If I get that straight it should be mentioned that it should be reinstalled again trough Kies.

Re: Battery Drain after 4.3 update

Actually I forgot to mention that I tried other things as well.:)
This was my last resort, and i posted this coz it worked for me not once but thrice.

So I would strongly encourage others to consider this option as promising, if other means don't fix your problem

Samsung told me there was a problem with Google location services and it was causing battery drain and connected to the play store. They also said Google is aware and working on a fix..

OH MY GOD!! you got that from Samsung?? :)

It's very unfortunate that Samsung don't even know here in India that a 4.3 release has been launched ...lol...I actually gave up all the hope on getting any help from Samsung, as they don't help such deep investigation (anything apart from their conventional process) like going and checking on the wakelocks.

I don't have any explanation on how this works but the NlpWakeLock within google services was causing the battery drain.

Now after the reset->firmware reinitialization (through kies) -> reset, I am using the same google play services, but don't see the phone battery being drained due to the wakelocks.

As Samsung just released the N7100XXUEMKD update couple of days back (which is a bug fix release), after installing it I didn't find the wakelocks problem getting solved (of course it is solved after reset->firmware reinitialization but not immediately after the udpate without these steps).

Let's hope they get this fix in their forthcoming update!

Sorry for not being clear. what i meant was to connect to kies -> do the firmware re initialization (In case you have already installed the update).

Thanks for clearing out the confusion. !

I myself started this thread as I found that the 4.3 upgrade was a disaster, and it hampered the phone battery massively. and Samsung don't seem to have targeted this issue in their first bug fix release either.

Re: Battery Drain after 4.3 update

PROBLEM FIXED!
I figured out the problem. After the 4.4.2 update I decided to use ART instead of Dalvic in the Developer Options in Settings. Right after that I started having battery issues. I revert it back to Dalvic but it did not fix the issue until I Factory re setted the phone. So, it seems 4.4x updated messed something up with ART and it can not be fixed unless A. you change the setting back to Dalvic, Reboot and B. Reset the phone. Must do both steps. Only changing the setting will not work. My battery life is back to normal now. I hope this helps others.

Re: Battery Drain after 4.3 update

Can you post some battery screenshots? The graph battery page and the detail also and the display info?

Thanks again Kelly for suggesting Wakelock. I have been running it for 4 hours and found Facebook and Samsung Push Services with 100+ times! I have removed many of the Facebook notifications and set refresh time to 2 hours (default 1 hour) and totally switched off Samsung Push notifications as this 100+ in 4 hours is extreme ffs. The next culprit is Screen (well I expected that) & Android OS. I'll wait to see how the Facebook and Samsung changes affect battery performance before I do anything else. However it does need to be noted that these apps/services were running on 4.1.2 perfectly well - 2 days battery on normal use!!

What I STILL need to get to the bottom of is how I prevent total app data loss after a factory reset. As I said before I followed this instruction after I updated to 4.3 and it wiped all my saved/progress data and Calendar DESPITE me using KIES to back everything up!! Restoring only replaced the apps but NONE of the data/progress/saves or calendar items. I totally fear doing any further factory resets until I know how to save ALL my data and how to successfully FULLY restore it. Anybody help?

TBH I have never restored anything trough Kies, but regarding the calendar I have mine synced with the google one. It works. It doesn't matter haw many times I wipe my phone, I just resync it with the google one and everything is on my calendar as it used to be.

I'm not having a drain, but noticed a TON of wakelocks for Google Play. The rep I talked to said he actually f found something about it at xda. I think he was looming up the wakelock app I recommended to you guys because it was developed by someone from xda.

Re: Battery Drain after 4.3 update

He was looking up the wakelock app I recommended, it was developed by someone at xda and he saw on xda that others are having a problem with play store "running" all the time. He then researched more and found out Google is aware and working on a fix, it has to do with the Google location service.

Re: Battery Drain after 4.3 update

OK... still no luck with the issue.
I unlocked developer options and clicked no background processes instead of Standard limit....now the wakelocks are at 81% instead of 77%.

Samsung c'mon!!!

Re: Battery Drain after 4.3 update

Hi beldie.. I too have now switched to google calendar away from S Planner because as you said it works. Yet another failing of Samsung. Just what is the point of Kies back up/restore if it is almost completely unfit for purpose.
Samsung have yet to reply to my email from 3 days ago.
Totally **** poor all round imho :/

I am now considering rooting my note 2 and buying/using Titanium as that does support apps + data according to the specs. With so many ROMS/MODS out there I don't know where to start!! :)

Re: Battery Drain after 4.3 update

i have done exactly as you said but there is no improvement. Now what to do guys. I am tempting to go for root and custom roms but my warrenty will be voided.

Re: Battery Drain after 4.3 update

Those of ypu wanting to restore app data try my backup pro from the playstore. Its 5 dollars to buy it. There is a free version as well. It backs everything up to the sd card or cloud whichever you choose

Re: Battery Drain after 4.3 update

Lame response from Samsung as follows:
Thank you for contacting Samsung Customer Support.

I apologise that you have been experiencing issues with your Samsung Galaxy Note 2 after the most recent update to Jelly Bean 4.3, I understand this must be frustrating as updating should be an easy process.

As we are currently investigating the reported issues with Galaxy 4.3 Jelly Bean update, the upgrading service has been temporarily suspended. We hope to have a patch or update soon.

We are committed to providing customers with the best possible mobile experience, and will ensure to resume the upgrading service at the earliest possibility.

Once the issues have been resolved an update will be released to get your device back in working order.

Regarding the saved application data, you will need to contact the application's developers for assistance.

Most developers have an ‘Email Developer’ link advertised on their app’s page on the Google Play Store for customers to provide feedback about issues like this.

I have responded with a little vitriol as typical large corporation attitude..blame the little guys, the app devs.. really!!? What ALL of them messed up, I don't think so. At least they have acknowledged the battery drain issue. My battery does seem to have improved thanks to your kind suggestions. Thanks newbroot83 for the back up tip. I'll look into it :)

I havent had any battery drain issues. I put in my stock battery just to see how it would do. After a full day I was down to about 50%. Hopefully a reset will fix it...

Sorry, here it is. Go to Select Settings, Developer options, select Runtime. change the setting to Use Dalvic. Reboot the phone. Once phone comes back it will update you apps. Next, go to Settings, Backup and Restore and select Factory Data Restore. Phone will put to factory restore. Please save all your data, apps information, SMS's etc because phone will be "completely" wiped out. I hope this helps. This worked on my Google Play Edition HTC One running 4.4.2
