Note 20 Ultra camera 108mp mode is disappointing

Got my hands on a Note 20 Ultra today in store, which I know isn't the best place to test a camera, but I had to try out the 108mp mode. This is my first experience with Samsungs 108mp camera sensor and it leaves me horribly disappointed.

The issue is you get a massive 108mp image that just lack detail and looks like they were captured on a much lower resolution camera. My assumption is the lens/glass covering just isn't high enough quality. High mp DSLRs require high end glass to resolve the detail, older or cheaper lenses just don't have high enough quality glass or the necessary coatings which results in softer images with less detail.

On the flip side pro mode increased shutter speed to 30 seconds and ISO to 3200, every phone from the Note 5 to Note 9 are limited to 10 seconds and 800 ISO. So that's a solid benefit if you're shooting in low light or doing long exposures.

Overall I'm sure it's good for a phone camera, seemed to focus well and I had no complaints with the pixel binned images. It's just 108mp is pure marketing hype and is absolutely useless. It's probably less useful than the 100x space zoom from the S20 Ultra.

Funny because the people who have the phone reviewing it have been nothing but impressed with it so far

Perfect example of not overreacting to a dummy unit in a store

How it handles pictures of people and pets remains to be seen but for everything else it looks like it takes amazing photos even though photos gets compressed on twitter etc

I thought that sensor supposed to shine in daylight , and Superior cropping once image is taken .
Can't wait to get mine to mess around with it:)

Never said it was a bad camera, it just can't capture anywhere near 108mp worth of detail. S20 Ultra had the same issue based on reviews I've seen and I've yet to find one for the Note 20 Ultra that even mentions the 108mp camera mode.

A 108mp image should contain a lot of detail and ability to crop way in while maintaining a quality image, from anything I've seen the phone cannot do that.

Well I get you don’t use 108mp for every photo these two examples look pretty damn sharp to me even with it being compressed by twitter

Will see when the retail units arrive

That's pretty impressive , lost some details the top picture with cars and guy on bike but that could be compression lost sending it to Twitter
But pretty good shots .

Yeah as well as the option on Tapatalk was medium quality too so I’m sure it looks far better in his camera role too

Same. I think that I will do an unboxing video with my 9 and a review of the 9 with my 20, lol

Re: Note 20 Ultra camera is 108mp of garbage.

If you actually read my initial post I'm not saying the cameras are trash but purely the 108mp mode. If it was poorly worded I apologize for that.

Unlike many of you, I don't consider YouTube and social media posts as credible reviews, the compression reduces image quality and size so you can't see the true potential of the camera.

Considering I've taken, edited, and cropped literally thousands of images on a variety of DSLR and mirrorless bodies while doing event photography(often in poorly lit environments) along with my preference for shooting RAW and editing photos from my phone in light room, I've got higher expectations for image quality than most of the readers on this forum.

I'm used to taking photos in doors, it wasn't a poorly lit store by any means, and I was near the front wall which is solid glass and the sun was shining brightly throughout the store.

I'm disappointed in the amount of detail the camera resolves in that type of environment based on my experience with other cameras. While I'm sure the Note 20 Ultra will be rated one of the top camera phones of the year, it just didn't produce as good of results as I expected. It's just my opinion.

Would you like me change the title? Instead if garbage to disappointed?

I get what you were inferring in your original post. It may well be a fantastic camera on a phone in other ways, but that particular mode (the 108mp mode instead of the 12mp binned image that most will use) is garbage. The title is a little misleading, but the actual post I got.

Re: Note 20 Ultra camera is 108mp of garbage.

Also, from everything I'm hearing from the YouTube reviewers, Samsung is not letting them put any photo samples because it is not the final software yet. They are supposed to be pushing out an update that updates the software.

Never had an issue on the S20 Ultra with 108MP. Maybe it's the processing on the Note 20.

I read that there was an update already pushed out. Not sure if it was camera related but one was pushed out already

Garbage is such a highly technical term that I'm not sure which instrument is capable of its measure.
