Morning peeps.

I am due and upgrade next month and torn between the note 3 and the note 2.

Do I get the cutting edge note 3 that is going to cost me a fortune ( in the UK from ?100+ to buy then ?42 PM) or do I get a note 2 that will only get cheaper when the note 3 comes out.

Is there a major difference between the 2?

I like to have the latest cutting edge device but would a note 2 be a good choice or not.

With noting is that I use a rooted S2 with a custom ROM and i like it very much. How is the note 2 for custom ROMs?

I have recently moved from Blackberry so not fully clued up on the android devices and there functionality. Learning as I go.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I doubt you'll see the Note 2 drop much in price. It won't be like S3 compared to S4 prices. You might see a $100-150 discount so it makes it $149-199, but I wouldn't expect any $99 deals. I'd say grab the 3 due to new features, better specs, and more longevity in this fast-moving electronics world.

To answer your question simply, yes there is a lot of differences between the 2. Question is, do the differences effect you?

The note 2 is scheduled to get 4.3 shortly, so for the sake of argument they will both have the same OS.
Screen is .2 inches bigger on the N3. Also is 1080p with a 368 ppi (More pixels per inch gives a clearer picture) The N2 is 720p, 265 ppi
Both processors are quad core, N2 is samsungs own exynos processor, where the N3 has a qualcomm 800. 800 is the highest end you can currently. The N2 is still no slouch.
Battery is 100mah bigger on the N3. There is also AC wifi and a few more sensors, like ambient temp and barometer. Also an IR port if you like to control the TV.
3 Gigs of RAM on the N3, N2 has 2 gigs. 13 mp camera on the N3, 8mp on the N2.
Both have NFC, MHL, bluetooth 4.0, micro usb and SD cards.

Edit, watch the 18 minute video posted in the forums for all the S pen enhancements.

In my opinion the biggest differences are the Processor/RAM and the screen. These are the things people will notice most. If you want state of the art and don't mind spending the extra coin then the N3 is the choice hands down. If your tight on money and just want a good, solid proven phone with excellent battery life and a lot of accessories available already then the N2 is the way to go. There will be accessories available soon enough for the N3, but performance is not proven yet. Anything you are curious about when it comes to the performance of the N2 is in these forums somewhere. You really can't make a "mistake" here, it really just depends on whats important to you.

As far as rooting, yes the note 2 can be rooted. Theres ROMs available for it as well. The N3 is an unknown in that dept. We have to wait till its released and developers get there hands on it.

Depends on the variant, but the Verizon Note II was as low as $50 after gc and pm in February, and last month, it was $50 again after gc, both from best buy.

Thanks for your input. I like the though of the 1080p screen as I have came from BlackBerry and the screen quality on my S2 is far better than I have been used to. I was looking at my wives S4 and the screen looks awesome on it. Really nice. I would like to have a good screen like that as I watch a lot of HD vids on my phone.

Screen size is important to me as the keyboard is better for typing on with my chubby fingers. Being used to physical keys its taking time to get used to. I have always hated touch screen keyboards. Only the keyboard typing on Storm 2 was awesome.

the spen sounds perfect for you then. swiftkey and the spen make typing a breeze. i thought i'd use the handwriting alot, and i guess i do if i'm writing something long, for for quick texts and short emails swiftkey predicts so well that you often don't have to type much.

By all means, if you can afford it go with the N3. You will not be disappointed. Making the jump from physical to onscreen keyboard wise takes some time, in some cases you will never be as fast as you were with the physical but you will get close. Luckily most stock keyboards are good at word prediction, so it will come to you faster than you think.
I use swiftkey myself and it has me typing close to the speed i was capable of on my BB curve. I also can relate to wanting a big screen for typing ease. I have big hands and still sometimes can feel a little cramped on my Gnex (1 inch smaller then N3). I'm hoping the bigger screen on the N3 will help alleviate that some more.
If you wait till they are in stores try to find somewhere where the N2 and N3 are both present. The difference due to higher ppi on the N3 should be pretty obvious. 263 is under retina levels, so 368 should make a huge difference. Brighter, clearer and colors will pop like they do on your GF S4.

But also keep in mind that if you do this there is a high chance you will be walking out with a N3. Just prepare yourself for the possible purchase.

Any other questions feel free to ask me or the forum. Most people are glad to help someone looking to make the big switch. Good luck with your decision.

Get the note3, then you can do a review for us

I wish I had one to review it.

Thanks for the advice. I want one but the cost is just too much. My wife got her S4 weeks after it was released and she got it free for ?33 pm. I was expecting something a little more than that. Not ?42 pm after paying ?150 for it.
