My grandfather gave me his Note 3 phone to fix because it stopped working (and this is not helping in convincing me to use Android).

I've googled online try recommended method but nothing worked.

The phone boots without issue, you see the Samsung screen loads but it takes 5 minutes... Once loaded, I get a black screen but can see the time, signal strength, battery, wifi etc on the notification screen.

I can bring the drop down notification and use the search feature while the screen in the background remains black. While I exit the search screen, I see a quick 0.5 sec of the home screen. I can from the search screen bring up apps but once you open the app, the screen blanks out (still see notification bar).

If I time things correctly, I am able to pull up the gallery and view the photos as well as use the camera. I am able to pull the contacts as well as the app but once those screens loads, it goes black (with the notification bar at the top).

I've tried holding the power and vol down button to reboot. Same problem. I tried booting it in safe mode. Same problem.

It could be hardware, it could be software (it's difficult to tell without having the phone in hand), but you could try reflashing the ROM (which will wipe all his data). See [Samsung] How to flash Stock ROM via ODIN. Otherwise, you bring it to a repair shop - where they'll first do a factory reset, which will wipe all his data (so he can't accuse them of stealing his passwords or something).
