Note 4 vs Nexus 6

Features are relative.

Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk

Exactly. Not everyone wants or needs bells, whistles, and a marching band when they use their phone. I don't even know anyone that would use 25% of all the extra features. Most people text, talk, watch vids, facebook/twitter and play some games. Any new-ish phone can do that. Sometimes I think people force themselves to use stuff they normally wouldn't just because they paid a ton a ton for it, and need to justify having spent all that money. Or maybe some people don't have a real life and just live on their phones 16 hours a day.

Has anyone used both extensively or owned both? I am wondering which one you liked better, why and which one did you keep.

GSMArena has really good reviews.

It occurred to me that where you stand could also be influenced by what manufacturer you prefer.
I am biased toward Motorola. I've always liked their style and choice of build materials.

I still have some "ancient" (pre-2008) Moto basic phones that would still get great signal reception and call quality if they were still hooked up.

When the Galaxy Nexus rolled out on Verizon, I bought it without thinking twice. I liked having complete control over rooting, customizing the software, and unlocking the bootloader. I didn't care for the style and choice of build materials, nor that the reception could be questionable in certain areas, but it had a very nice screen and ran stock android very well for its time.

I used it longer than any of my current smartphones to date, and when I sent Samsung one that was out of warranty, they repaired it (motherboard replacement) for a very reasonable price.

Do I like the fact that my favorite manufacturer finally got to make a Nexus? Hell Yes.

I was happy even before when Motorola got rid of their old school Motoblur and started running a more stock android experience.

However, as much as I love Moto, I would happily give Samsung more money if they were asked to design next years Nexus.

I tend to agree with you though I can't say it's without bias. I considered both but decided on the note 4. Never used touchwiz but was sure I'll hate it from what I heard. It's starting to seem that most people that knock touchwiz either used the earlier iterations or have never used it at all. It has its quirks but it's by no means a bad skin. I'm still within the return/exchange window but decided it's the note for me. There aren't that many situations where I'll use the front facing speakers. To each his own. I still have a nexus 4 running lollipop and I'm certain it'll be stunning on a much larger screen. Will reassess in 2 years again when am in the market.

Let me fix this for you. You wouldn't want to post false information now would you?

Nothing but Note! A little rim, some backboard, but mostly Note!

I'm not biased at all. I like the Nexus better. I'm just capable of taking my own personal preference out of the equation and call a spade a spade. If you like Touchwiz, the Note 4 is the better choice. If you don't and you have to have pure Android, the Nexus 6 is the best choice. When a device can legitimately say it has the better display/camera/battery, I generally consider it to be the better phone. I just like pure Android enough to like the Nexus better.

This guy knows what he is talking about. I own both as well. Design aside, the note 4 has a better camera and screen. Arguably the best on the market.

Yet, as a whole package, the nexus 6 is the phone I prefer. I enjoy everything from camera to the software.

I own both phones. For the masses...the note 4 might be the more inviting device.

That being said, the nexus 6, in my opinion, is the only phone that can match, and surpass the new iPhones in speed, fluidity, and software presentation.

The Nexus 6 screen will blind you at 100% - I would highly advise you to stop if you are staring at the screen above 75% brightness. Is the Note 4 screen brighter - yes - but who cares unless you are going to use it as a flashlight.

Nexus 6 sceen disapointing? Pffft!

I guess my eyes aren't as sensitive? I would not call either phone "blinding" at 100% in OK store lighting (in the dark.. yes, even my N4 is blinding, but I use my phone in lit areas more often than not). Though, I have to go back to mess with adaptive brightness. But even still, brightness isn't everything. Couldn't really test color accuracy, but I'd like to see tests from other folks besides Anandtech (not that I don't trust them, but I'd like multiple sources).

Touchwiz is a mess. I find Samsung devices very confusing to use and the headache to get around it isn't worth it. That is even outside the look and feel of the device being childish. From all the bloatware put on Samsung devices to all of their extra features, the devices are not easy to use. I would be much more inclined to use a Note 4 if Samsung didn't muck up Android so much. But, like Apple, Samsung is stuck not being able to fix their OS because too many people only know their OS.

This. Samsung isn't my favorite OEM, but they went above and beyond this time on the Note 4. If you're a Sammy fan, get excited about the S6. They're really starting to put all the pieces together.

A big part of me had to support the Nexus this year. I've had them all since the Nexus S and I had to keep the streak going. There's just something about the Nexus line that draws me in every year. It's probably because it's the only phone that I can put next to an iPhone and say "my phone is faster/more fluid/has better touch response" and get away with it. If you own the Note or Nexus, or both, you've made good decisions and it just comes down to preference from there. If anything, I'm just glad that on the Android platform I've got 2 ridiculous phablets that cover 2 totally different usage cases. It's a good time to be a smartphone enthusiast.

9.3% more screen area and soft buttons are only on screen when you need them and I wasn't referring to style which is subjective but quantitative measures as fit and finish, materials, etc. There simply is no comparison...

Was referring to OK Google via voice from off sceen. Notifications are way cooler too due to ambiant display.

You may own both but you are obviously biased. Note 4 is an outstanding phablet in general and is the better choice for someone that uses the S pen but otherwise Nexus 6 is a slam dunk winner!

I own the Note 4 and can activate OK Google with the screen off and locked with no problem. There's a setting for that in Google Now. So far, has worked flawlessly.

These are the instructions I followed from blackout720 on XDA-Developers to enable "OK Google" with the screen off:

No root, no need to download or install anything.
This work for other devices as well as the Note 4. This enables the Google now "Ok Google" Feature where you can active Google now while the screen is off. This is something like the Moto X feature.

1) Open Google Now
2) Go to Google Now Settings
3) Click on "Voice"
4) Enable "Audio History"
5) Click "Ok Google Detection"
6)Click "Always on" and follow the remaining directions.

I played around with both, and as much as I usually am not for samsung phones, I liked the note better. There really is nothing super compelling to get the nexus, which has really been a disappointment. It is a great phone, don't get me wrong, but the sheer size just makes it unwieldy for some. If you want super fast updates, then the nexus is for you. If you care about battery life, camera and some of the touchwiz features, the note will be the phone to have. You really can't go wrong with either phone, but think its funny how any other time, this wouldn't even be a comparison as the nexus line was like the holy grail for android fans. Not the case anymore.

It's more of a testament to how much Samsung is improving than anything else. Choice is never a bad thing.

I agree. And for once, there is very little lag on Samsung devices. Will be interesting to see how lollipop improves the note4.

If you've seen some of the videos of it running on the S5, it looks really, really fast. Which generally means it'll be even quicker on the Note line.

I have seen a few of those videos. And it's great sign for it to be running smoothly on the s5 which had some lag issues. Can only imagine how smoothly the s6 will run.

I currently have the Nexus 6, Note 4, and iPhone 6+. All great devices that excel in different areas. My breakdown and ranking of each:

Camera:
1. Note 4
2. iPhone 6 Plus
3. Nexus 6

All are pretty well rounded decent performers but the Note 4 in my daily use produces the best looking pictures and easily bests the others on video recording although the time lapse and slo mo on the 6 plus are amazing and tend to produce better results easier but I just don't use those enough to matter.

Build/Design:
1. iPhone 6 Plus
2. Note 4
3. Nexus 6

All are great but the iPhone 6 no matter what you think of Apple is a beautiful device and just feels amazing. The Note 4 really impressed me and is a close 2nd. I dont care for the old, stale look of the front and the odd shaped home button but the ergonomics, chamfered metal casing, and fake leather back are all really impressive to me. Nothing wrong with the Nexus. Its nice. But just feels a little plasticky to me and slightly large for my taste and I'm a big guy with very large hands. Also dont like the fact that it is really fond of keeping all your fingerprints stored on the back for future use. Still a slick device and the only other phone besides the note and iPhone I'd put above it is the m8 as far as build.

Display:
1. Note 4
2. Nexus 6
3. iPhone 6+

Note 4 is in a league of its own. Hands down. Still in awe everytime I use that device. Nexus 6 is great as well but just doesn't pop like the Note 4 display and tends to be a bit cooler. The 6 plus is nearly as good and honestly could be considered a tie with the Nexus. It really is splitting hairs when trying yo decide between the two.

Software/Performance:
1. Nexus 6
2. iPhone 6+
3. Note 4

To me this is what really makes the Nexus a winner. I love 5.0. I love the notifications. I love the fluidity and the overall look. For the first time I find an Android UI as overall visually impressive as iOS. I still really like iOS I just really get bored with it. But the 6 + flies. I like a lot of the enhancements Apple has implemented on ios8 and for the 6 plus but they have not done anything really ground breaking for a while. The notification center while it looks nice is a huge cluster eff. Note 4 is great and doesn't perform bad in any area. I just still loathe TouchWiz. The hideous colors Samsung adds to the quick toggles in the notification center irks me. The lags and stutters I get every so often annoy me but not enough to ruin the experience. The S-Pen integration is amazing and really the only thing attribute that Touchwiz offers that I really like.

Battery:
1. Note 4
2. iPhone 6+
3. Nexus 6

So far by my usage. The Nexus and iPhone are really close. I've only had the Nexus a few days so this could change.

Speaker:
1. Nexus 6
2. iPhone 6+
3. Note 4

Not much to say here. Nexus is loudest with the most clarity to me closely followed by the iPhone. Samsung should be ashamed of putting that chintzy little speaker on the back of an otherwise excellent piece of hardware.

In the end if someone put a gun to my head and made me choose I'd pick the Nexus. Software is what makes or breaks the overall experience when the hardware is mostly on a level playing field as it is with these three devices. I LIKE using the Nexus the most but I agree with Adranalyne above that the Note 4 may be the better overall device. I'd take a Google Play Edition Note 4 over anything else if it were available.
