Note 4 vs Nexus 6

Got my Note 4 yesterday. I have to admit I underestimated it. It strange because it seems like a normal sized phone coming from using my Nexus 6. The battery life is really good but I'm still not sure it's as good as my 6 Plus. I haven't had enough time with it to tell but it looks to be on par with the OnePlus One which is really good. Well, I know this is a Nexus 6 forum so want go too far, I can post my thoughts on the note 4 forum.

I started liking the simple clean look of the nexus more. I have come to despise bloatware because I will never use it and cannot delete it without rooting. If the Note 4 came in an unlocked US model, I might be interested but not with all that att bloat.
Here's my problem:
Google Fit,
Google+,
Google Keep,
Google News & Weather,
Google Play Books,
Google Play Games,
Google Play Movies,
Google Play Music,
Google Newsstand,
Google Sheets,
Google Slides,
Google Wallet.

12 apps that I didn't install, don't use and can't get rid of. I love my N6, but coming from TouchWiz and so many people making a fuss over fluff that can't be uninstalled on the Notes. I ask, what's the difference?

That is a drop in the bucket compared to what att and Samsung put in a device more like 20 or 25... You can always get an iPhone! :)

Difference is you can actually disable the Google apps from turning on. There are Samsung apps on my Note 4 I can't even force stop(it will turn itself on after awhile and after a reboot), let alone disable. What you listed isn't even bloatware and you can disable them from turning on.

People misconstrue the meaning of bloatware to mean any app they don't want. It's third party apps that are put in along with the system OS apps. ChatOn, S Memo, Knox, Samsung Hub isn't bloatware because it's part of the Touchwiz experience. Same with Google apps that come with a Google phone. I don't mind first party apps on their own phone. Google apps on a Samsung device? It's part of the agreement made when companies use Google's Android services on their own OS. When Acer makes Windows laptops Internet Explorer isn't bloatware software(do people still use this word?) because it's part of Windows.

Flip board, Yellow Pages, AT&T wifi hotspot, are third party bloatware apps on my Note 4. Same with the Hp online printing driver on my Nexus 5, that isn't a Google or LG app so that's bloatware. Milk music isn't bloatware on a Samsung device. It would be of it initially comes with a Nexus.

I didn't bring my Nexus 6 to work so I'm not absolutely sure, but I don't think there is a non Google/Motorola third party app. Of course nowadays that depends on if you put in a SIM from a carrier during the initial set up. But I'd rather have that than having the bloatware along with the system partition.

Here's the advantages:

1) Less bloatware in terms of data size, which means more free space
2) The apps can be disabled, which free up RAM and CPU cycles

I prefer the N6. It's faster (Touch Wiz cripples the Note) with stock Lollipop and what seems to be a good camera. The Note 4 had a fantastic display and better camera. Too early to tell on battery life, but I expect the Note to win there. Just depends on the features you value.

After using the iPhone 6+, Note 4 and even the Xpheria Z Ultra the N6 really doesn't feel as gigantic as many have exaggerated.

N6 checks the boxes I didn't like about the Moto X (better battery and camera), so pleased so far.

The videos showing lollipop on the Note 4 look promising. They are reporting that the look of the UI has changed a bit and it is snappier. I personally believe the Note 4 is extremely fast so if this rumor holds true, there should be a lot of happy Note 4 owners out there.

If using the S pen is important to you get a Note; if having a bigger screen, much better build quality, Motorola cell radios, ambient display with cooler notifications, "Google on" feature with screen off, and great sounding stereo features is more important to you get a Nexus 6.

Battery life and camera quality is slightly better on Note 4 but not enough to matter.

Touchwiz is not bad and Note 4 will get L. next month...

Umm.......I think you've feigned being unbiased in this post but it's pretty clear. You can't mention one of the things the Note does better, and then quickly list every subjective thing about the Nexus 6 and then pretend that ANYONE would still get the Note.

I know in every review i've seen, the Note 4 is said to have the best screen ever in a smartphone. That's a big selling point. Then you have the S pen with all of the software bonus that comes with it (that alters the entire smartphone experience if you choose to use it). The build quality on the Note 4 is NOT that far behind the Nexus if at all. In fact i'd say that if you randomly did a poll among a wide range of users, it would come out almost dead even simply based on preference. Especially if you take appearance into account. You make it sound like the Nexus 6 has far better build quality, and then you pretend the better battery life and camera on the Note 4 means nothing. Build quality is as close to the Nexus 6 as your comparison between the two cameras and battery life spans.

I am a HUGE Nexus fan. The Nexus 5 was my first Nexus and I absolutely loved it. I miss it every single day until I pick up my Note 4. I also own the Note 10.1 but I want the Nexus 7 2013 pretty dang bad and have wanted it since it came out. So I feel like i'm stuck in the middle between the Samsung Note's and the Nexus line. I want a Nexus 6 bad but I just can't give up the S pen, better camera, incredible screen quality, or the look of the metal chamfered edges. It's perfectly okay to prefer one over the other, but can't we just be real about it and own it instead of poorly pretending we're being unbiased?

In the words of The Cable Guy,
"Ah don't care who y'are, thet there's funny"! "Git-er-dun!"

I had both and the note 3 and 2 before that. Liked the note 4 a lot and it had better battery life and screen but I'm not complaining at all about my nexus. I'm on vzw as well

I own Note 2 and a Note 8.0 so I am not biased against Samsung. I agree that the battery life, screen, and camera in low light of the Note 4 is "better" of the Nexus 6 but in my opinion not enough to really matter. I played with the Note 4 again next to my Note 2 and I really can't find a reason to upgrade besides perhaps the camera but I am not going to upgrade my phone only for the camera. The sceen size is .2 inches longer but they decreased the aspect ratio from 16:10 to 16:9 so the overall increase in area is only a few percent.

I agree if you are an S pen user the Note 4 trumps the Nexus 6 but for screen size (9.8% larger screen) and speed Nexus 6 trumps the Note 4.

Build quality is not even close between the two so you are smoking Samsung fruit loops if you think they are in the same class. That "pleather" look on the Note 4 makes the entire phone look cheesey.

Stereo front speakers also blow away the tiny mono speaker on the back. Let's not even start on the best in class Motorola cell radios.

But you forgot the "On Google" feature, Tony.

I'm kidding. You don't know anything about phones.

I can certainly understand why you would favor the Nexus 6, but you have to realize that not everyone feels the same as you. The build quality argument you have can be easily argued the other way. There are threads complaining about the Nexus letters falling off, that the back gets greasy, and that there are issues with the screen. And in conjunction, I have seen posts/threads about the Note 4 being one of the best devices, structurally, on the market. So it is possible to be on both sides of the fence on thr build quality issue. I have heard that thr Motorola radios are awesome. I couldn't comment on that because I haven't had a Motorola device in years. But it is something that I have heard or read. But I have also heard/read that Motorola produces horrible cameras. Now I don't know if either is the case, but I have heard of these things. I believe that there isn't a "one device fits all" when it comes to Android. And that's awesome that we have so many choices. The Nexus 6 is an amazing device. The Note 4 is an amazing device. Anyone who has been able to integrate one of them into their daily lives is very lucky.

I agree with this completely. And you're dead on about Moto's radios, they are incredible. You're also dead on about their cameras, they freaking suck. My wife has the 2014 Moto X and I am in love with that device, but the camera just does not compare to the Note 4. I can't speak to the Nexus 6 camera however.

As far as build quality, Samsung could make a perfectly beautiful device out of a solid slab of a 1/4" slab of solid metal and people would complain it was cheap. Everyone castrated themselves when they saw Samsung's faux stitching on the fake pleather back of last years devices, and so this year Samsung got rid of the cheesy stitching so now people scramble to complain about just the faux leather feel. I would bet everyone whining about the pleather would have also complained if they went with plastic, or glass, or anything else. For some reason or another, Samsung cannot shake the whole build quality rep. I get the feeling most people saying the Nexus 6 build quality is so much better, have never held a Note 4 and are not aware of the improvements. If they have and they still say it's build quality isn't top notch, then they are incapable of being objective.

I have been stuck between the N6 and Note 4 for a while and only recently decided that I'm going to go for the N6 now that my contract is up with Sprint.

Frankly, after spending time with both, I really wish the N6 was in the Note 4's body. My problem with Samsung and TouchWiz is not the OEM itself, but the fact that Samsung has deliberately chosen not to evolve it...to the point where it feels like my S3 is an ugly duckling. Touchwiz has not aged well. For as many changes as reviewers have highlighted on the Note 4, it still feels like a brand new beautiful phone stuck in two year old software euphoria. The design inconsistencies are brutally noticeable. Everything works a little bit less than you expect.

I love the build quality. The screen is amazing. The metal sides feel great on the hand. Given that it's a Samsung, I know the camera is spectacular. But at what cost? TouchWiz is old and bloated, and does nothing but frustrate the software process.

My friend has the new Moto X and it just works. Even the gimmicky features work well. It's both simplistic and innovative at the same time. It's fully customizable without bloating your RAM. It just works. I felt the same way about the N6 I saw in stores. It just felt like it was light years ahead of the Note 4, although the screen, build quality, and camera are indeed of lower quality.

I never envisioned myself saying this about Samsung or Touchwiz, being somewhat of a sympathetic Galaxy user, but their complacency has really shown itself to be problematic. Samsung has not addressed the problems and issues that combat its superior hardware and as a result, I truly question them for the first time in a long time.

Don't get me wrong-i still think the S Pen is a plus, and I still find the Note 4's hardware to outdo the N6, but Touchwiz is officially a major handicap. I now believe this is the root of a difficult decision for many. For me, the N6 will mean less compromises (outside of storage) and down the road, less phone envy.

And one more quick thing...I envision that the Galaxy S6 will offer an jncredible makeover of TouchWiz...perhaps something I could ultimately buy into. But while the Note 4 is almost guaranteed to get this version, it wont be optimized for this likely overhaul like the N6 is with Lollipop. So even looking ahead, I think the N6 is the right future-proof choice.

I'll believe it when I see it... I've seen plenty of 'first look' at preview builds of Touchwizzed Lollipop and, while its different than the KK TW, those differences are kind of minor. Looks like they de-Lollipoped it and square-pegged their 4.4 stuff back in to be honest. You could easily pass their 5.0 TW stuff off as just an updated KK TW build. I was really disappointed. Samsung makes such good hardware.... why muddle things?

Granted, I'm fairly certain the purpose of the heavy-handed look and feel of Touchwiz has an agenda.... an attempt to desensitize people to how Android looks. Samsung has been angling for a way to replace Android with Tizen for a while now, but doing so would be a complete disaster for them.... but if they get their users to the point where they couldn't tell the difference between Touchwiz on Android and TW on Tizen.... well, that still won't work.

Samsung is at the proverbial crossroads. Their sales are going into the toilet and they are losing market share quickly. The approach that got them to the top of the mountain is now failing miserably and they need to shift gears. But, to repeat my first statement... I'll believe it when I see it.
