Note 8 and Dex Station

I got a Dex with my S8+. Overall the experience is good as long as you keep your expectations in check. There are some significant limitations as well, the biggest of which is Chrome is not supported, which is important for me. However, the Samsung internet browser is very good, and has extension support too. The MS Office suite of mobile apps is fully supported and the experience is very similar to using the web versions of office, but slightly better.

I'm hoping the additional RAM in the Note 8 will improve the experience.

Thanks for that.
Shame about the sound not being played through the hdmi though. Missed a trick there media player wise surely.

I got the Dex station when I preordered the note for Samsung for only $50 a lot of the accessories were giving great discounts, at first it was $79, but then when I added more stuff to the cart it dropped even lower to $50. I also got the gear vr for $20.

I know. re: the 9/5 early dates: People don't realize but it's a carrier thing. I had too much hassle trying to order on AT&T's site that had tech issues. Even after reps processing my last installment so that I could upgrade and then properly order online through their site, it still refused me. I had two phone calls and 3 chats and I was told 9/5 was their delivery but when I still could not order online, I was not making a 6th contact to AT&T. I can wait 10 more days. I just decided to go through Best Buy again and had no issue on their site so 9/15 it is for me.
Update for me. I received an email today from BB that my Note 8 has shipped and looks like I have an expected delivery date just two days away -Thursday 9/7. Yeah!!! I had hoped it might be early! Woohoo!

My only negative about the Dex is I was hoping the hdmi would carry sound also.

I just saw a Youtube video about this... the app from Touch Technologies called "DeX Hub for Samsung DeX" has settings that (among other things) allow audio through HDMI.

*Disclaimer: I have no connection or affiliation to the app or the Youtube channel.

Great, thanks for the info. Have had a look at the app. Obviously can't test it until my dex turns up ( we have to apply for it after the note 8 turns up here in the UK) but there are hdmi sound settings in there. Cheers.

So after a bit of trial and error I have a setup that works very well. It will easily work for my needs at home so I don't have to rely on lugging my laptop back and forth if I choose not to.

I ended up with a 24" Dell monitor with HDMI input. I tried one with RGB and DVI (because that's what I had) and used an HDMI to DVI cable. With no way to set the screen resolution it ended up with a very large black bar at the top and bottom. The one with HDMI input works great.

For my input devices I had a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard but the keyboard had issues where random keys would repeat maybe 20 times. This had been an issue with this keyboard on other devices but I had hoped it was an anomaly between the keyboard and device, however it was not to be. Mouse was fine and seem to respond normally. I ended up with a wireless Logitech set (MK 360). It works great and requires no setup or software installation.

For audio I'm using an OontZ Angle 3 plus Bluetooth speaker. It connects up right away and works just fine. This seems to be a very good solution.

The major advantage for me is to just dock my phone, connect to my network (Cisco anyconnect), and RDP onto my office desktop. The issue with this to start with was no full screen RDP window. After a little research I installed DeX MAX. Dex MAX allows you to open most apps in full screen mode. The DeX Hub task bar goes into an auto hide mode when I open RDP in DeX MAX at full screen. This allows for access to the windows task bar with no issue.

Now I have a lot of playing around to do to see what else it can do. Everything else is gravy, the RDP function at full screen is reason enough for me to appreciate the DeX.

I hate having to take off my case to use Dex, so im gonna order this Type C Extension cable from Amazon. Will let u know how it works. :)

Hi All-

We are creating a docking station similar to the DeX and we are currently running a Kick-Starter for it. Please search "cDock" on Kick-starter and you can find our product. It runs 4k @ 60Hz and have many different ports to give you that much more flexibility.

I'm very happy with the DeX at this point. I was using the DeX Max this morning and had 5 desktops opened in Microsoft RDP app. I was able to switch in and out of each desktop with ease.

Watching the video below gave me a few new ideas and shows how you can run Netflex in full screen mode. It seems I'm seeing a bit more DeX support. I think it could replace a desktop for a lot of people. Video is intresting.
