Note 8 - Comparison Pictures (color/other phones/etc.)

Am I the only one that was cringing every time they dropped the phone in that video?

Cheers,
BR

There's truth in that! But color can still have an impact on how the eye sees size. But, yeah, it's bigger than my Note 5, though not by all THAT much, so I'm used to the overall feel (the Galaxy S5 that used to seem huge in the industry feels like a tiny toy to me now.) Though I see all these people with these massive otterboxes and my Spigen Hybrids's slim cover makes my note seem Smaller than everyone's overprotected S3. I'm pretty careful with my phones, but any small item that is around you at all times will have its drops. Those tiny Spigen Ultra Hybrid cases have kept my Note 5 spotless despite a few minor drops onto not entirely hardened surfaces (other than the seemingly glued on pocket dust that gets under the case onto the back that always looks horrible.) So I'll be going with one of those again this time. They're totally clear, so you see your original color through them. I love that with the "black" Note 5's metallic blue. Still leaning toward Orchid....if it's not a silver mirror. I don't want it to look like a gigantic iPhone 3 :P

Honestly, I think the color does not matter, the size alone is likely to draw attention on it's own ;) I always have a case on my phones so color is less relevant. That Said, I went with Black..
Cheers,
BR

Agreed. Soon as you put on a case or skin...this is one of the reasons why I also went with black. The color is the same all around.

I finally got to see and fool around with a Note 8 at AT&T this afternoon and I didn't feel it was as big as everyone complained about.

My Note 5 is bigger than my current S7 Active and the S7 Active (in a case) is about the same width as the Note 8 and only maybe 3/8" shorter. The Note 8 felt totally comfortable in my hand - from the reading I've done since the "Live Reveal", I've expected this thing that was going to be sticking out of my hand like 3 or 4 inches. It was really comfortable and controllable... as I'm typing this, I just realized, I never turned it over and looked at the fpr - duh! I always used the Iris Scanner on my Note 7 so probably will on this too! No comparison photo 'cuz I only have my S7 Active to shoot with! That's it... will hopefully purchase Friday morning in store, 9/15 - have 10:00 AM appointment!

Good to know. Also, did it seem "mirror-like" at all? Some of the You Tube videos showcasing colors made it look less gray and more silver, and very mirror-like reflectivity. Your photos don't seem that way.

Between the two is one a bit more "blend in with the crowd" that the other? If the gray is silver-reflective it might draw attention. OTOH the monolithic black despite being black, is a very uniquely black color that might draw attention more than the average "black, but it's really dark gray" phone.

If there's one thing I don't want to do with a $1000 phone is draw attention to it ;)

I don't think the Orchid was mirror-like... might be a little shiny as the black is also. The edges on the Orchid are silver though while the black has black edges if I'm remembering correctly. Those edges might be mirror like if that's what you're getting at, but as far as the back of the phone is concerned, neither seemed mirror-like to me in my brief time with both devices. I don't think you'll be drawing too much attention to yourself based on which color you choose... that said it is a Note 8 after all. Some people might notice it...

There's an authorized Verizon retailer in my town, figured I'd stop in this afternoon and see if they had one on display. Better yet, the manager took me to a room in the back and let me play with a demo unit. It was great because it was just the phone, no big security tether on it or anything.

Initial thought is that it feels much better in my hand than my note 5. Its ever so slightly skinnier, maybe a half inch taller. The curved edges felt prefect and weren't too dramatic. I saw concerns on a different post about text wrapping down the curved screen, this is definitely not the case, everything fits right on top as it should.

I preordered the black and think I definitely made the right call. This one was orchird gray, which has just a touch too much purple shade for my liking, definitely more noticeable on the Spen.

I'll agree that the finger print sensor probably isn't in the most ideal location, but it definitely isn't the huge deal that everyone who knocks it makes it out to be. I hold my phone primarily in my right hand. Maybe it's the way I hold it, but for me it was pretty effortless to slide my finger up the back of the phone right on to the sensor.

FedEx has delivery scheduled by 8pm Tuesday.... less than 48 hours now. Can't wait!

I hope it's more gray like that. I loved the silver on my 7, and got the silver on my 7edge..
not the fondest of the purplish tint to the orchard...but didn't want black or gold

@quadtronix Thanks for the great description! Sounds like I'll be going for Orchid. Not as fond of the silver edges, just because I"ve had that on both the white S5 and the "black" (blue) Note 5, but I'm not sure I can take the blandness of the solid blob of black, and the Orchid sounds interesting enough without looking like an iPhone 3. IMO the "all piano black" looked best on the S7 which was (very much TOO) curved in a way that you saw the edges as it blended with the screen. The more squared off Note series doesn't benefit from the uniformity of color as much.
@kj11 Interesting you saw purple. Most of the big reviewers said it ditched the purple of the S8 and went more gray/blue than purple (but the pics here look all gray.)

Sounds like Asus' "Amythist Black" a few years back on tablets.
