Note 8 Internal Storage

Hello everybody, I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and I am coming over from IOS. I have some questions, my Note 8 has 64 GB's of Internal Storage and I have inserted a 128 GB MicroSD Card but:

When I go to my My Files to see how much Internal Storage I am using, it is saying that I am using 16.86 GB's of Internal Storage, I have not down loaded any Apps and I have transferred all of my photos over to my MicroSD Card. So how come am I using that much Internal Storage?

Second questions, how do I find out where my Internal Storage is going?

Third question, I have put in a 128 GB Samsung EVO Plus SDXC UHS 3 MicroSD Card, it is supposed to be a 128 GB MicroSD Card but when I go to My Files, it says I have 119.2 GB's of Data available, where is the other 8.8 GB gone to?

I have 128gb card and it also shows as 119gb. That's normal and has northing to do with the phone or Android. Google for reason online. Many explanations out there.

As to the 64gb internal, it also follow the same logic as 128gb. So it's more like 56gb, and then you add space that OS occupies (Android 7.1 in this case), Samsung skin and app on top of that and you are easily up to 16gb gone from that card.

Nothing out of the ordinary here

Part of the difference is using decimal versus binary measuring of data. The card was marketed as 128 GB decimal, where in binary, it's less, due to a Gigabyte is 1024 MB.

Go to Settings>device maintenance>Storage. Here you can select internal storage or SD card and it will tell you exactly what is using your space. FYI The system memory on my Verizon Note 8 takes up 11.1gb. So I started with about 53gb out of the 64gb before I installed or downloaded a single thing. That's why putting music, photos and videos on the SD card is so nice. Internal storage is really just apps for me.

A good idea is to backup the internal and external storage (SD card). Something like Smart Switch, sync to cloud storage, or even copy/paste from phone to PC. SD Card reliability has probably improved over the years, but a good best practice to get into the habit.

this is how it always has been, on every computer, smart phone, tablet ever. the operating system and built in apps take up space. My first iPhone used two or three of the eight gigs available.

kinda like how a 2x4 is actually 1 7/8 x 3 7/8, and had been since the 40's.

64GB is 59GiB - 128GB is 119GiB. Going to https://www.google.com/search?q=gb+to+gib gives you a nice little converter right at the top of the page. (So 16.8GB used is about 15.7GiB used, which is about right.)

It is a beast, the first few days, I had it, I was so carefull. I always washed my hands beforeusing it(LOL) and never gave it to anyone. I am loving my Note 8 so far.

The change from 1024 to 1000 was a decade ago or more. And yes it is "disclosed" on product pages in footnotes.

But there's hidden system partitions and 300MB or more to map and index file system directory. To point to cell pages.

It's no big deal, that's less than 1% overhead.
