Note 9 Light Leak!

My replacement is on its way. Mine is all the way up the right side. It's especially bad when I'm laying in bed at night when it's dark. It is horribly distracting once you notice it.
P.S. it doesn't look that bad in the picture taken with a Stylo 2. It is way worse than it looks.

so anyone have luck getting their replacement light-leak-free ?

this been issue since samsung using curved glass, and every time people complain about it, samsung said they acknowledge it and will try to fix it
but until now they have yet to fix it..

i think it happen due to nature in production process (not sure if its caused by glass curving or gap between glass&metal frame or other else), so if they want to fix it, they need to change how the produce the display / unit, which is will costly

while its defect, if it like that since the production, and samsung passed it as qualified product, it still defect or not ?
to consumer its, but to them probably not

in the end, you can try ask for replacement, although u need good-luck to get one without light-leak, that before u find another defect, probably like dead-pixel etc.

I was in Best Buy a couple of days ago looking at the Note 9's they had on display. There were 4 in all, and all of them had very bad light leak. I returned mine and decided to get something else. I know a case hides the light leak, but I don't want to be forced to use a case all the time.

I can't see any "light leak" on mine. Of course, I'm 70 years old. LOL

The two glaring things I do see is the "Apps Edge" pullout menu on the right, and the "Samsung Pay" ad that periodically appears on the bottom. But those are not panel problems.

I just returned my black Note 9 due to severe light leak on one edge with a mediocre amount on the other. Often I don't use a case, I refuse to settle for this sort of a defect on a $1300 CAD device. Moving on, will check out the Note 10 when released.

Fortunately, none of that on mine. My Note 8 didn't have it either.

Hope anyone with that problem gets it rectified.

BTW guys, as it's been mentioned before this is not a light leak. it's a curved glass refraction kinda thing. I have it on mines and idc about it, especially also cause it's in a case where I can't see it ever.

This is incorrect. The light leak has been widely reported and if this were to be the case I wonder the following:

1. Why was is severe on one side and not the other? I had a solid color wallpaper set and it's clearly severe on the left side while not as bad on the right.

2. My co-worker has the exact same phone setup meaning same color and same brand of screen protector. I had him set his to the same wallpaper and we stood side by side in the same lighting condition with the same screen brightness set and he had zero leak on either side of his phone.

3. There has been widespread reports of this on various news sites.

This is not what you say it is. It is a manufacturing defect where the frame paint has been hit or miss, hence why some have it and some don't and those who do are leaking to different degrees.

you are correct, but what all I'm trying to say is that it's not a traditional light leak as we know them to be. the nature of the curved glass as well as the lack of paint on some devices is causing this light refraction to occur.

I sympathize with those who are having this apparently annoying problem. But really, the subject line does not deserve an exclamation point. "Fire!" or "Tsunami!" or "Stop, thief!" are exclamations. "Note 9 light leak" is not.

Incorrect. It is due to a $#%&! frame paint job at the manufacturer. Samsung has acknowledged this and is investigating. It's reported that not all phones receive the same coating of paint which is why you see it on some devices and not on others. I would not be settling for some spotty paint job, we spend too much on these phones and a leaky display like that to me is unacceptable. You pay a premium you should receive premium.

Where did they acknowledge this and admit they are investigating it?

It's a leak.

If you look at the Note 9 glass, there is a noticeable black bezel all around the glass edge... even on the sides... that mate to the metal frame all around. Look at the definition of refraction and you see it doesn't apply.

If they get the fit perfectly from glass to metal and if the black bezel is painted to the edge of the glass as should, there should be no light leak.

It probably leaks light because when bending the glass, the edge of the glass is not joining the metal frame at the exact angle to meet perfectly flat and you get the light leaking through. The only reason it doesn't effect the water resistance is because the adhesive is filling in that gap between them and strong enough to maintain the rating... hopefully.

It's leaking because of an imperfect fit between the glass and frame... no matter how microscopic the gap.

Is it possible the "Samsung Pay" ad you are referring to on the bottom is the actual "Samsung Pay" app. when you are on your lock and home screen you will see the labeled "Samsun Pay" pull up for using the app. This can be disabled if you do not like or use Samsung Pay or access it in another way.

This is NOT a defect, Erica Griffin has covered it in her review once again for the Note9. Every single Samsung with curved display has this, and the amount of leak really depends device to device, but it is NOT a defect.

My S7 Edge and Note8 have this to, and I have submerged both in water with no issue at all, the water indicators reflecting no water has gone in to the phone.

It is a manufacturing defect. I have spoken to Samsung themselves twice on this and both times I was told, just like I've read online on a few occasions that it is due to inconsistent paint jobs in the factory. There is black paint and the reason why we see it sometimes and don't others or the the fact it can be spotty or different by device is because of the way the device paint job was applied during manufacturing. Period.

I like Erica's videos but Erica is not Samsung and this issue IS a defect.

I am talking about it being an actual open part of the phone.

If you watched the video you would have noted that Erica echoes exactly that, the fact that it is a paint rather than a gap issue. ;)

My response was in response to you saying it was not a defect when it clearly is a manufacturing defect and that all devices have it to different extents. I can attest to the fact that not all devices have this. I recently went to a Samsung and Best Buy Store. In total I looked at 5 devices. 3/5 had it while two did not. I also have two friends who have new Note 9 devices and one has it while the other does not. Mine had it and was one of the reasons why I returned it and opted to stay with my Note 8.

I would maybe reclassify this and say it’s... a cosmetic defect/flaw/QC issue.

Yes, it doesn’t effect functionality or effect the water resistance. But it’s still a cosmetic defect.

But with them having this on the Note 8 and on the 9 and if it were on the S7 edge for so many years without being able to tighten the QC to make sure it’s fixed, they are basically saying it’s “normal” or that they are aware of it but not a warranty issue, it’s basically saying, “live with it.”

And Erica’s wrong... it’s not on every phone. I don’t have it. It can be done. But it doesn’t affect water resistance so if I did have it, I’d just live with it.

Samsung really doesn’t really care about it. With every new model year samsung seems to be reducing the curve on the phones each year anyways so maybe by next year they’ll finally get rid of that issue.

But their QC is lacking... light leak and recently the banana bend on their pens... again doesn’t seem to affect functionality in the pens either... but it’s still a cosmetic defect and definitely a QC issue.
