Noticed I have earpiece buzzing... Is it even worth it to get a replacement?

One thing I've also noticed is that there is no buzz if there's something using the speaker as well, like music or the phone. It's only present when the phone is idle, so it's not actually affecting anything in use

I've noticed it only when the screen is on and I put the earpiece to my ear, then I can hear it faintly. I'm starting to think it's somewhat normal, since I've read that other phones also have this.

EDIT: I also notice it slightly during a call. Doesn't bother me all that much since most calls have some kind of white noise anyway.

After about another week of use, I've decided that I'm probably not going to get a replacement for the following reasons:

-I'm only going to have the phone for 6 more months until the next Nexus is released
-The buzzing sound is very faint and can only be heard in a dead silent room, but it does increase if the screen is touched and icons are pressed
-Also, I think it's one of those sounds that only certain people can hear (maybe?) because I've noticed that my left ear hears a different sound than my right when listening to the earpiece
-I don't really want to go through the whole RMA process, as it easy as it seems, as you all have told me (i.e. credit card holds; I really can't deal with that at the moment)
-Like Rizy7 said, and I agree with his points, it's a pain to have to back everything up and set a new phone all up again
-Everything else about my N4 is near perfect anyways
-From what I've heard, most N4's have this, and my replacement is likely to have this too

What do you guys think, though? Lol

I received my N4 last Thursday, and am loving it so far. I just noticed today that I seem to have the infamous "buzzing" earpiece problem. I can hear it in a quiet room when I put the earpiece about 1-2 inches from my ear. Not a big deal, but kind of annoying nonetheless. I'm wondering, do most N4's have this problem anyway? So is it even worth getting a replacement?

I have the newer revision with the two nubs on the back and the smaller camera opening, if that matters.

had two Nexus 4 and they both were like this, even with the screen off and not on a call, there would be a buzzing sound if you put it up to your ear.
its even worse when your on a call because thats all that you hear.

Interesting. I'm assuming most of them have this then? Seems to be a result of the manufacturing process.

I don't think mine does it with the screen off, only when it's on, and it's pretty faint. I think I may be able to hear it slightly during a call, but I really have to listen.

Meh, the phone works properly, even with the buzzing, but in my case since I noticed it on day one I was always listening for it. However, I bought mine outside the Play Store, so I don't have a manufacturers warranty. So I just bought a replacement speaker for $20 (Cellphone Repair Shop), sent it out to them, had it installed, and had the phone back within a week ($45 total). IMO, it was worth it. Buzz and hiss are nonexistent, love it!

Glad to hear you got it fixed!

I'm at a standstill on what to do... I don't think it's really that big of a deal, but I'm totally OCD and hate these things, even if I don't notice them.

Oh well, I've got three or so more days to decide haha

You hit the nail on the head. Phone worked, but it bothered me just enough to figure the $45 fix would put my mind to ease for the next year or so I have the device.

EDIT: Although, if you've bought from the Play Store I believe the fix is free for you? If you're as anal about this stuff as I am, I'd vote it's probably worth it.

My wall charger made a buzzing sound and I called in to see about having the wall charger replaced.

Oddly Google has no way to RMA just the wall charger and it is either RMA the whole phone or nothing at all.

After three months of buzzing, I RMAed the entire phone and the new wall charger does not buzz at all.

Yes, it is free for me, although they place a "hold" on your credit card until the receive the defective device. I'm still trying to find out what that means.

See, for you, the cell phone repair shop actually took apart your phone and replaced the problem. With the Play Store, they just send you whole new replacement devices, which probably still have the buzzing sound to some degree. So it's really a toss up I believe.

It means that part of your credit limit is not available to be used until the hold is removed. It also means if they don't receive the defective device within the time frame specified, the hold will convert to an actual charge.

That's what I figured, thank you!

However, the reason I'm so hesitant to ask for a replacement is because I may already be at or near my credit card limit. Unfortunately, I don't have a way to check either. Plus, I have a contested charge from the whole Nexus 10 ordeal I've been going through. Will that affect my ability to receive a replacement? I think I'd like to try at least one replacement N4.

Yeah, if they can't place the hold, they won't send the replacement. You should be able to contact your credit card company and find out if there's room for the hold.

I think there should be, but I know I've racked up some charges during this billing cycle lol...

How fast will I see the hold released once they receive my defective unit?

How many replacements did you go through? Were they the new ones with the nubs on the back?

I think I may try at least one replacement. Can Google tell if you send back the same replacement unit if you aren't satisfied with it? I'm sure it doesn't matter though.

Sorry for bumping this thread, but I have only two days left until I'm out of my 15 day exchange window, and I'm struggling to determine if it's worth it.

Can you send back the replacement device Google sends you, or do you have to keep the one they send you and send back the original? Like, is there any way they can track that?

Because I would like to be able to test both phones side by side, choose the better one, and ship back the other one, regardless if it's my original or Google's replacement. I'm assuming this is possible?

What exchange window is this? You get a few weeks to send a device back to google before they charge you plus the nexus 4 is better available now so you will get it very soon after you place an RMA order. You can test the new one for a few days side by side and see which one you prefer. Im sure they wont mind whichever you send back as long as you send at least one back in the time period.

I believe you have 15 days from the date of delivery to exchange or return the N4. Unless I'm mistaken? Anything outside of that window is handled by the warranty I believe?

Yeah, I didn't think they'd care which one I sent back, just as long as I send one back. How long do I have from delivery of a replacement device to send back one of the N4's?

Oh yeah, that's only if you're thinking about returning the device for a refund.. If anything is wrong with your device you should be okay with just your warranty. I just checked, its 21 days from the date of the order of the replacement.
