Notification Area Tip

Newbie to android...still loving my TB.
Is there anyway to bring up (or make that pull down) the notification bar without trying to get my fat fingertips on the bar itself to drag it down (any shortcuts, multi-button pushes, etc.)?

from your home screen, hit menu, then notifications

Start swyping downward on the phone above the actual notification bar. Like at the Verizon symbol or the top of the phone. Hope that makes sense....
