notification bar settings

Hello, is there anyway I can customize what kind of notifications are to be shown in the notification bar? There are notifications which I find are not necessary and I do not what them to clutter my screen.

Only if it's a notification from a particular app, and that app has a setting to disable notifications.

Go to Settings, Application Manager and you can click on any application that is sending you a notification that you don't want. When you click the application, right under the Force stop option is a check mark for Show Notifications. Remove that check mark and that app should no longer send you notifications.

Thanks for the help! As an ex iphone user switching over to android, the settings and customization seem overwhelming at times. And the extra notifications make me seem i am a busy person!
