Notification dots and badges gone

Since I got my 2XL almost 2 years ago, it has worked like this: When I got an email, text, missed call, etc., a badge would show up on the icon. If, say, an text or Whats App message was from my son, his contact photo would show on the text or Whats App icon on my home screen. I think if the message was from someone not in my contacts, then a number or some other image would show, I don't remember exactly as it became so normal, I almost did not notice.

In the past several weeks, those have stopped. Now when I get a message, the only thing that shows is the small icon up on the top notification area, nothing on the app icon itself down below.

I went into the settings to make sure "Notification Badges" was turned on and I can only find a setting to turn on "Notification Dots". That was turned on but no dots or badges show.

I have always used Nova Launcher with Tesla Unread. I saw that Tesla Unread had been discontinued and removed from the Google App Store so I uninstalled it. No change.

I don't know if this happened with a recent update or if I inadvertently changed a setting that I now can not find.

Can anyone help direct me what to check so I can get my badges back?

Thanks!

So if you tap the Notification Badges drop down, it only gives you an option for Dots? I get None, Dynamic Badges, Dots, and Numeric Dots.

Is Nova fully up to date for you?

When I tap the notifications drop down on my phone, I only have the choice of Notification Dots. In Nova Launcher settings>Notification Badges, I have dynamic badges medium set. Nova is activated as the default launcher and up to date.

Do you still have the old Tesla Unread app going? I had it installed but I read it had been discontinued and removed from the App Store. I thought that might be my issue so I uninstalled it and no help. Now can't reinstall as it is no longer in the store but that should not matter as Nova now has the same function built in.

Try going into phone setting, apps then reset app preference. Or type it in phone settings search bar

You don't need the Tesla plugin anymore, don't worry about that. Maybe something got stuck in Nova after you uninstalled it. Have you already tried restarting the phone and the launcher (Nova settings - advanced)?

I will consider this but for now, maybe not. Partly because it seems odd that this would help, but mainly because I think this would reset all app settings to defaults. Then I would be stuck having to update each of my many apps for location, data use, background, etc., etc., preferences. This would be very time consuming and I doubt I would get them all back to where I want them,

Yeah, I can see that Nova has taken over what Tesla used to do so that is good. I do have Nova set correctly though. I have restarted the phone several times since I noticed this, but I have not gone to Nova Settings>Advance and killed and restarted it that way. I will try that and wait to see if badges come back.

I just did the Nova kill and restart. I then just got both a gmail and a security camera notification and the badges showed for both. I will see if it sticks and keeps working. But for now at least that suggestion to kill and restart the launcher from with Nova seems to have worked. Must do a harder reset to the launcher than powering the phone? At first glance it seems like all my previously set Nova settings are still be in place so that is good.

Just to be sure, these are the Nova settings that you have enabled, right?View attachment 308014

Yes that is what I have had set. I will watch it and report back but for now, thanks, as your previous kill and restart seems to have fixed it.

Don't worry, that's just a restart and you didn't lose any configuration that you had before. I'd would restart the phone as well but it doesn't look necessary. Probably something got stuck after uninstalling the Tesla Unread plugin and the restart took care of it. Tell us how it goes.

Glad it's working now. In the future, you could also try clearing the Nova Launcher app cache in Settings>Apps.

This will explain what app preference does
Maybe something gave notifications a restriction.

This happened to me too. Suddenly back when I had my Samsung S7. About 2 mos ago I got a new phone (2XL, just to make this more confusing) and all has worked fine.

All to say that I don't think the problem is the phone but Nova Prime. I too, in my research back when this exact problem was happening to me on my S7, found out what you had re Tesla.

What I can tell you is that blat that time it hadn't occured to me to uninstall Tesla, but I can say that I never installed it on my 2XL since ai got it. Maybe having the Tesla unread on your phone is the problem????

Good luck!
