Notification Sound for text message not working

It's lollipop - After 2 hours of tech support with Verizon, and the Verizon Tech calling the Samsung Tech, I was told the stock Samsung Messenger App with Lollipop no longer had an alert for open SMS Messenger because "If it is open, it means you are looking at it." <eyeroll> I explained to them that I was waiting for someone the other day after texting them "I'm ready" then I proceeded to put my shoes on, they sat outside my house and texted me 10 times to let me know they were waiting... with no alert. The same issue with the stock Calendar, stock notifications don't work, however if you choose the dropdown choice "email" as the alert it works, but then you have to clear out your email because it is filled with emails of alert notifications.

After looking at the 3rd party choices (for hours) I installed both SMS KK and Calendar KK, I paid for the Prime version. I love them. I disabled the stock apps afterward. I have no idea what back processes these 2 stock apps were running but since I disabled them my phone's battery life has doubled and everything is running smoother/faster.

Finally, I am considering disabling the stock Galaxy S5 camera app because the Lollipop update has affected it as well. Autofocus is iffy, as soon as I open it the phone gets hot and the battery drains rapidly. I have 2 other Camera Apps on my phone already and neither of them have performance issues.

I hope this helps others, and thank you both for helping.

Could you please be more specific on the apps? A search for SMS KK in the play store doesn't kind an app with that name. Who is the creator of the apps? That may help. Thanks

As ridiculous as this sounds, I have spent the last 2 days fiddling around and diving through songs and I finally found a fix that worked for me. I have the galaxy s5 through Verizon...go to Settings>>>Applications>>>Messages>>>Notifications>>>Notification Sound. When it pops up to let you pick what sound you want, turn the volume up or down using the button on the side of your phone. I have no idea what made me think of this, but it worked and I finally have sound on my text message notifications. Hope this helps everyone!!

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

I would say you have no idea how long and hard I've been searching for this answer... but you clearly do. I literally let it go for 4 months.. .. . . . .

How and why that is even a thing in the settings is ridiculous. I love ANDROID and Galaxy phones but dang. This one thing had me about to smash my phone with a hammer.

ReeseyMa18 - A great BIG THANK YOU for your insight. I have been going crazy for a month trying to discover why I was no longer getting any sound notifications of Messages, and missing many important texts to me. I checked every notification setting I was aware of but never thought of the one in the Applications area. You NAILED it perfectly, for which I am very grateful. :)

I was having the same problem with my notifications. I have a galaxy s6. I I found the answer in the in the settings under apps went to Messenger and it said muted. I was able to unmute and now works normal. Hope this helps some of you guys. Good luck!

SOLVED FINALLY the notifications not working on my Galaxy S8. No matter what I tried I could not get the text notifications to work on my phone. All notifications were allowed at every place in the phone possible. I have tried every fix posted on the Samsung forums and on the web and none of them worked. I did not do a factory reset I read that doesn't always fix the issue. Yesterday, I downloaded Textra to test it and still the notifications didn't work. I downloaded the Chomp Text app and my notifications are working again properly. Solved at least for me. Best of Luck.

Hi guys.. If you have Clean Master App.. It might be the culprit.. Go to Clean master>Tools>Notification Cleaner>turn it Off.. It restored my notification sound.. It worked for my Samsung galaxy J& core.. Good Luck

Galaxy 8 - Go to:
Settings-
Notifications- "Select which apps you would like to receive notifications from" : scroll down to Messages- and slide button over
Go to Advanced tab on top of screen
Scroll down thru apps to verify that Messages is unblocked.

I tried many of the suggestions in this thread, but none seemed to work for me. I was not receiving notifications of any kind for text messages. I tried restarting the phone, removing the SIM card, going into Settings > Applications > Messages > Notifications and tried all the tricks with the volume and choosing a different notification sound, etc.... still nothing. I have the Galaxy S6 by the way. It turns out there is another setting aside from turning Notifications on or off. There is also a setting to block notifications. I don't know how it got turned on but here you go: Settings > Applications > Application Manager > Messages > Notifications > Allow Notifications > ON!!

Thank you Krystel!! Like you, I tried many different ways to fix this problem. Your suggestion was the solution. Somehow the "Allow Notifications" was on blocked.

Try this Settings> Applications> Messages App make sure you have the notifications turned on. (By where you force stop/clear cache)

thanks buddy but it did not work. i have the found the solution going through above method. go to setting> Applications>Messages App then check its notification are "muted or not" if yes then click notifications & turn off the option > show silently

Make sure your phone is not paire to a Bluetooth speaker as that will divert sounds to the paired device.

I had the same issue. Very frustrating. I found that in my setting > notification >message + that I had show silently was on. Once I turned that off, it worked again. Not sure how it was turned off.

For samsung galaxy j2, goto settings->Sounds and Notification->App Notification->Messages->set as priority and turn off the block notification

My text notification sound was not working properly on my LG Stylo 3 with Nougat OS.. It made a sound different from my selected "woodpecker" and did not repeat as I had selected.. tried all the fixes suggested but nothing worked until I downloaded Chomp Text app.. immediately starting working perfectly TY TY

Unfortunately still not working for me still (Galaxy S5, Android 4.4.4, AT&T). I've tried all of the above fixes, nothing works. Am still not getting text message sound when message app is open and chat string is ongoing, only when the app is closed do I hear a notification sound then, upon opening and reviewing message, should that person keep texting, no sound. I've also tried installing a 3rd party message application from Google Play Store just to test it out, and still have the same problem, no sound with chat/message text string. ANY THOUGHTS APPRECIATED. Thanks! (If / when AT&T updates to Lollipop maybe this will go away ugh.)

Download Textra from google play. it notifies in active chat

FYI.

If you have enabled Google's still experimental "System UI Tuner" for your Settings app (available since Marshmallow - go here: https://www.howtogeek.com/318539/how-to-get-androids-system-ui-tuner-on-non-stock-devices/ to find out how) then make sure Notifications for whatever app (in this case Messages) is set to at least Level 3. Go to Settings> Apps and tap on [your app name], then tap on Notifications and drag the Importance slider at least 3/5 of the way to the right. Anything below that and you won't hear a sound.

That was the issue for my mother who has a Moto G5s. Me I'm on the darkside (iOS). So why am I here? Cause I hate it when stuff doesn't "just work".

Hope this helps some of you Android users. Bye! https://forums.androidcentral.com/images/icons/icon12.png
