Notification sound?

I just got my phone last week.i downloaded the Mp3 ringtone and edited a song. I saved it as a notification and set is as my notification, yet it still plays the default sound when i receive a text. It shows that my custom sound is selected yet it still wont play it. I know the app works because my custom ringtone plays when i get a call. Any tips on how to fix this?

which app are you using?
i use handcent sms for my texting and my ringtones work fine
