Notification sounds (In call/Facebook messenger)

When I'm talking on the phone via Bluetooth I don't hear a notification sound when I receive a sms message using the stock messenger app. This issue also occurs with Facebook messenger. I do enjoy talking on the phone, but I don't like missing all these notifications. If anyone knows how to fix this or maybe an app that will force these sounds please let me know, everything I've tried has failed.
