Notifications stop after sleep

Hi,
I am new to the Nexus 7, but not to Android. So far I am loving the N7, but I have one problem that is really bothering me. I use both Touchdown (work email) and the built in email app (not Gmail) for my emails. If the screen is on, everything works just fine, and if the device has been sleeping for a minute or two everything is still fine. The problem is, once the device has been asleep for a little while - 10 minutes or more I'd guess, the notifications stop working.

I have checked to be sure that wifi is set to stay connected always and auto-sync is turned on for both apps with push enabled on both as well.
I have run out of places to check. Anyone have this type of problem or know of a solution?
Thank you - any help appreciated.
Shannon

What do you mean the notifications stop working?

So, you have everything set, as you said. You know you get email, because you manually sync it, right? Did you make sure your notifications were even on? If you did, what did you set the interval to?

Yes, as I said, the notifications work just fine as long as the devices isn't sleeping. They even work fine if the device hasn't been sleeping for very long, but after it has been asleep for a little bit, then the notifications just stop, even though I know that I have received email. Both email accounts (Touchdown and built-in email app) are set to "push"

While I don't use Touchdown, I have two IMAP accounts set up on the built in email app and this is not the behavior I am experiencing. I get notifications 24/7 whether the screen is sleeping or locked, from email, calendar, etc. Just heard some while I was composing this and I haven't touched the device in over 8 hours.

That is exactly the behavior that I am looking for! I just can't figure it out. I actually called the Google customer service number and the person that I got was very nice and helpful and set up a N7 with push email while I was on the phone and actually experienced the same behavior that I am getting. She said she'd forward it to the development team. Apparently it isn't a wide spread problem though.

May not be the root cause, but there's a bug in JB's Secure EAS support :

http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=35326

I use Touchdown at work and I can tell you there a lot of options and settings in advanced preferences you should review. I don't use it on my N7 as I'm waiting to see if they release that fix in 4.1.

I have reviewed all of the advanced settings in Touchdown and all seems well. The thing is, even the built-in email app is giving the same results. If it was just one application, I could blame it on an app setting, but since it is both apps, that makes me think that this isn't the case.

Ahhh... that might be it. My calendar and email notifications are not push events. Does your alternate email program have a setting to enable periodic syncs?

It does, both the built-in email app and Touchdown both are configurable for periodic checks rather than push. I prefer not to use it that way, but I can certainly test it out.

Silly question; do you have any type of task killer that may be kicking in preventing syncing?

No, no task killer installed at all.
I do have Astro file manager installed, and i think that has a task killer built in, but i believe that it's a manual thing. I'll double check that though.

Same thing happens to my tablet. While I have it charged over night and it goes to sleep none of the notifications come through. When I turn it on all the notifications come through. I'd love to find out what the cause of this may be.

Interesting, while I'm not happy that you are having problems also, it's good to hear that I'm not alone! If this is actually a bug, maybe it'll get fixed in the next update. I have been through the settings many times and I can't find anything that could be wrong.

I have a theory about this. When I look at my battery history, I see little fine lines in the awake timeline while I was asleep, but none in the screen on timeline. I am guessing this was the N7 waking up to do the periodic syncs for email and calendars that it is set to do.

It seems that with push notifications, they simply don't get through when the device is sleeping. Don't know if this was a conscious design decision or a bug, but it makes sense.

Does your history show any activity in the awake timeline during the period your device is sleeping and notifications should be coming but are not?

I think I am seeing the same as you. Take a look at the pic and see what you think.

Hard to say with such a limited timeline, but yes it seems it did a couple of things while it was sleeping.

Here is min from last night. You can clearly see fairly regular activity while it is sleeping.

Yes, I do clearly see that on your screen shot. I'll have mine on all day today to get a better sampling. I appreciate you thinking this through with me!

Interesting, I have no such option available. What kind of mail server are you connecting to?

Secure EAS ;) [Edit: probably. That why we use Touchdown Pro, my Gingerbread and now ICS HTC phone won't do Secure EAS at all. YMMV.]

I have some further information.
I have been on a wifi system at work today and all seems to be working well. Notifications are working as I'd expect. I am not sure how my home wifi system could be causing this type of problem, but that's the only thing I can think at this point.
Anyone have any ideas on what I need to check?
Thanks!

Is there any way to get apps to still sync when the device is awake? I turned off wifi in sleep mode, and and ever since the email widget never updates (even when I manually sync) and it never sends me notifications, which is frustrating. My laptop's in repair, and I'm relying on this device..
