Notifications stop after sleep

This could be almost anything, from default port blocking on your router, to UPNP settings, to NAT issues. You could drive yourself crazy trying to pin this down so it's probably best you talk to your IT guy at work.

Yeah, this definitely sounds like it could be a pain. Still, I'm glad that it doesn't appear to be the N7.
The wifi that it has worked successfully on has been two different open public wifi's... When I said I was at work, I was, but I was actually using the open wifi from a business next door.

You've don't have a Netgear router at home, do you?

// Posted from my Nexus 7 with the Android Central app :-) //

No, the modem/router that I have is a Motorola SBG6580.
I do have a Netgear range extender in the house, but I wasn't connected to it, I was connected directly to the Motorola.

Is there any way to get apps to still sync when the device is awake? I turned off wifi in sleep mode, and and ever since the email widget never updates (even when I manually sync) and it never sends me notifications, which is frustrating. My laptop's in repair, and I'm relying on this device..

I'm not sure on this. My problem is different. The only thing I can think of is to check "data usage" --> "settings" and make sure auto-sync is on.

The problem is, once the device has been asleep for a little while - 10 minutes or more I'd guess, the notifications stop working.

Did you ever resolve this issue? I'm seeing the same thing with my Nexus 7 (but I don't use Touchdown and I'm not even sure what that is). I don't get any notifications while my tablet is asleep at home but I get them no problem in the office. This includes Gmail, Yahoo Mail, Google Talk, Google Voice, Facebook, etc. We're using Netgear routers in both locations, but I don't know why that merits a  since I don't really hang out on these forums regularly. Any help is appreciated.

Unfortunately, I haven't resolved this. I've just lived with it so far. I think I have narrowed it down to an issue with my router at home though. It seems to lose the connection intermittently when I'm not using the device, but then it'll come back all by itself at random times. I don't have this issue on other wi-fi systems. Definitely frustrating.

Is there some issue with N7's WIFI and Netgear routers? I am using a Netgear DIR-655. I do not have any problems with it that I have noticed though.

I am having the same problem of not getting any notifications after the tablet goes to sleep. I am not rooted and running fully stock. I do use the Auto Airplane app and have wifi set to not be on during sleep mode. I have noticed this problem ever since the first 4.1 update.

I get notifications no problem when the tablet is not alseep. Even some other apps work when the tablet goes to sleep such as my Messenger With You app.

I've read several posts from people having trouble with Netgear routers. It's anecdotal, though.

I wonder if some of the problems reported here are the result of WiFi going to sleep when the device sleeps. I've run mine both ways ... but seem to get notifications promptly when it's plugged in and WiFi is set to stay on while sleeping when => plugged in.

I am having the same problem on my Nexus 4 and I had the same problem on my Galaxy Nexus.

When the phone is a awake, I receive alerts.
When the phone has only been resting a few minutes I receive alerts.
When the phone has been resting for awhile, no more alerts.

I've been reading through this thread and I'm worried that people might think you're not receiving notifications at all, but if you're having the same problem I am, which I think you are then you receive the notifications, you are simply not alerted to them by sound, vibro or anything. In fact, the only alerts I ever receive when my phone has been asleep is when it's ringing due to an incoming call. Nearly anything else does not alert me. So annoying.

This happens everywhere, WiFi, no WiFi.

Plume, however, will happily chirp away whenever I have tweets to read. Bizarre.

I'm having the same issue it seems but on my Samsung Galaxy S4. This is what I'm experiencing which is what I posted on the S4 forum:

"This is driving me insane because this seems to just started to happen tonight. And the worst part is this problem is inconsistent so I'm not sure what is going on.

When I lock my phone and it goes into standby I test it out by sending myself an instant message through google talk/facebook messenger/email. Sometimes I will hear my phone ring and I'll get my notification instantaneously when the screen is off. Everything seems fine.

I try the exact same thing 10 minutes later. I send myself another instant message/email and I hear nothing. No notification at all. I get bombarded by all the notifications when I unlock my phone and go to the home screen after about 2 seconds. I have the "sync" toggle on as well.

There have been times where I've been thinking I haven't received a response from friends yet on my phone because I never got a notification, yet when wake my phone up and unlock it lone and behold they actually have responded a while ago.

My data is on 24/7. I rarely use my wifi connection.

I've restarted my phone in hopes to fix this issue and same thing is happening. I'm tempted right now to just go back to factory settings and start all over again. I hope someone could please help! "

As I mentioned earlier, this literally just started to happen out of nowhere because it was working just fine yesterday and this morning/afternoon.

I have the same issue. I find that when the phone is asleep I can get notifications from my IMs, but until I bring my phone up to the lock screen or out of sleep, it will not notify me of any emails. I use an email and an exchange. not one of them work when in sleep.

The workaround

I'VE FOUND A WORKAROUND of this no-push-notif during deep sleep problem.

Earlier, I tried holding partial wakelock so the device never sleep, this of course works alright, but drains battery very rapidly (5% / 30mins).
This is NOT ACCEPTABLE.

So, I tried something else :
automatically waking up the device regularly every 30mins, with the help of Tasker (which doesn't turn on the screen at all).
The result is :
7 hours after screen off and a good night sleep, in the morning I sent myself a BBMsg and it arrived perfectly in about 5 secs.
Battery consumption is totally acceptable : only 4% drop during 7 hours (dual sim ON, data ON).
That's days ago, and still works perfectly until now, I'm happy with it, so I'd like to share the AWESOMENESS.

I'm not sure about push notif from Google servers via GCM, I don't use any app which takes advantage of GCM, I only use BBM which uses its own servers.
In this case, you should first try adjusting heartbeat interval using PushNotificationFixer (which can't help me since it only resends heartbeat to Google server).

Tasker setup :
1. create new profile : Time
* uncheck both start & end time (so it starts and ends from midnight to midnight)
* check Repeat : every 6 minutes (during deep sleep, this 6 mins expands 5x to 30 mins)
2. add new task :
what you do in this task doesn't really matter, the point is to do something in a regular interval (I only use Alert Morse, so I know that the profile is still running)

GODSPEED !!!!

PS. :
if you're not familiar with Tasker, after installation you have to :
1. allow it as admin (system Settings > Device Administrators)
2. turn on its service (system Settings > Accessibility)
3. put it on auto-start list
