Notifications turn on display while using Maps Navigation

I was driving using Maps Navigation with the display off to save the battery. Then I received a notification of a text message from my daughters. The display automatically came back on. Since the message had many recipients and many replies I kept having to turn off the phone to save the battery so I could navigate home. How do I keep this from recurring? I really don't want to text while driving.

Android 7.0, Galaxy S7, Verizon.

So I start the car, start navigation, then select Settings, Sounds and Vibration, Do Not Disturb, Custom, Messages from None, and Turn On Now. Sounds like a lot of work to remember and do. I never had to do that before. I am using Do Not Disturb at night and those settings would be different than Do Not Disturb while driving.

I did change Show When Screen is Off to off under Do Not Disturb settings. But that is a setting only when Do Not Disturb is On. I don't see a setting under Maps, or Maps Navigation, that disables texts or notifications when the screen is off.

I have no idea what changed. I just don't like it. I ended up calling them asking to be removed from their message. But I couldn't call out using the car Bluetooth connection as OK Google doesn't work with my 2016 GM Van. So much for hands free and no texting and driving. Terrible phone.

There were three things that have changed recently that may have caused my problem. Phone software updates, using a different Messages app, and driving without the phone charger and the display off.

I had deleted Google Messages to see if it was the source of the "Update Advance Features" notification that keeps going off on my phone. It wasn't. But I did not reinstall it and instead I was using the stock Messages app on the Galaxy S7. Reinstalling Messages by Google LLC, then starting maps navigation, and turning the screen off, and texting my phone, results in the screen not coming back on:).

So the solution is to not use the stock Messages app on the Galaxy S7. Maybe my phone won't light up anymore when I get a text too. That would be great as if its in my pocket sometimes its been getting pretty warm. And I've noticed that sometimes when I pull it out the screen is on. Samsung must think that we all keep our phones out in sight all the time.
