If I'm on my phone browsing etc. is there any way to have the notification screen pop up and show or is it just a notification sound and I have to scroll down from top of screen to see them?

it depends on what app we are talking about. some apps like textra have their own notification settings
Depends wholly on the app. Some apps brings out a small notification, whereas others just play the sound.
The Samsung notifications are really a step down from stock Android notifications.
