Nougat Battery Drain

Thanks, I turned off location. I think I had done that before but after various resets the location was turned back on. Specifically, google's settings -> personal -> location I'll see what happens. In the meantime there is no change, 3 times more drain than MM with no use and more drain (hard to to tell how much) with any activity.

Edit: didn't help. I have now disabled everything that can be disabled in the apps menu except for the dozen or so apps that I use. I just updated google play services because the phone complained that maps needed google play services to be updated. I was at 100% but now battery is plunging off a cliff after that update and a reboot.

Edit2: 6 hours, 15%, no use. Used to burn 15% in a 12 hour day with some use.

Have you tried to use Package Disabler from 'policedeveloper' ? it's in the Google Play store.

drone3, I used that for a while and disabled about 100 packages from a list I found in this forum. It didn't solve the problem although it helped a little. The normal battery monitor shows Device idle and Android System as the two highest uses. When the phone is sitting on my desk unused, those are the two highest followed by Android OS. And that is it, no apps, no screen, no other entries, just those three.

Also when I run in "ultra" power save mode most apps are turned off. Same with safe mode. Neither of those modes stops the power drain.

Went to the Sprint repair store to check on reflashing. They discussed other options like a hardware repair, buying a new phone, etc. I insisted on reflashing and ended up with that for free. They even backed up and restored my call and message history, my pictures, etc. Only had to redo my settings and uninstall some bloatware. Restarted, charged, now on battery...

Edit1: just 2% drop after 60 minutes. Decent, not great but decent
Edit2 4 hours 12%, with Device idle and Android System at 5% each

One more power drain symptom. Installed and ran the radarscope app that I used to run in marshmallow and it used 10% screen per hour, plus 7% for radarscope, plus other android packages plus the usual Device idle and Android System for about 20% per hour. Never had any drain like that under MM.

Still 2.5% per hour without using the phone. Top drain today was 13% Device idle, 12% Android Sys, and 1% for Cell standby, Google Play services, Samsung Push Service, and Android OS. I plugged it in to the charger, turned on Wifi, and it started downloading Google Text-to-speech. I don't want that. I had it disabled, but somehow it reenabled itself. I have disabled everything that can be disabled under the app menu except Google Play services and Google Play Store, Maps, my 3 or 4 installed apps, maybe a couple of other things. But most of the disable buttons are grayed out.

Even disabling doesn't really work, my router log shows Facebook. I disabled Facebook although unfortunately I cannot disable Facebook App Installer or Facebook App Manager. There are a lot of other connections being made that I do not want. The whole phone experience is depressing, chews up battery doing a myriad of useless things that I have no control over and invades my privacy big time.

Downloaded a new update today. I have updates set to manual and hadn't checked for about 2 weeks. New version is G920PVPS4DQF1 I'll post results later today. Was still draining after 15 minutes, so I wiped cache and rebooted, now recharging.

4 hours, 10%, no usage. In light of all the connections above, I am turning off mobile data to see if that makes a difference. I think I tried that once before and it make no difference. Another hour with mobile data turned off and no change in battery drain, 13% after 5 hours.

update: now chews the same amount of battery in airplane mode. Going to testing safe mode again as recommended on the Sprint forum. Update: safe mode uses up 2% per hour, divided among Device idle and Android System.

Next, I think I should run the battery down or figure out some other way to recalibrate the battery.

Ran down the battery to zero and the phone shut off. Then I turned it on and it booted, then shut off pretty much right away. I turned it 14 more times and it shut itself off. After 15 times it didn't want to turn on, so I waited a bit then turned it on, it booted and shut off. I waited again while the battery cooled a bit and turned it on one more time for good measure.

Now I am charging with the phone off. Once it is fully charged I believe I am supposed to run it down to zero again. But I will also see if the power consumption estimates have changed after this first complete discharge. It's the first time I've had the battery below 40% and I rarely had it below 60-70% especially before nougat.

result after 100% charging and turning the phone back on: very high drain, 15% in 3 hours. I would say the test failed, but I'm not sure what I was testing.

Has my battery gone bad? I normally never let it run down by much. Why would my battery go bad the day I upgraded to Nougat? Would a bad battery show up as high usage in Device Idle and Android System? Those are always the highest, each about the same, but Device idle sometimes 1% higher. Everything else (e.g. Google Play, Android OS) is 1% or doesn't show up, unless I use the phone and then see some Screen and app usage.

Update: 4 hours and 12% with no use. I see google play services using 2% out of those 12%. Device idle and Android System use the other 10% So I disabled Google play services and Google Play. Won't be able to install new apps, but anything else should not be affected? I'll see if that helps, although I doubt it will.

Update2: seems to be helping a little: 7 hours 17%, so only 5% drain in the last 3 hours.

I've read the whole conversation and I must say this, as I've a galaxy s6 from sprint and I was experiencing the same problem with the drain (I'm still but not is controlled a bit). First of all disable all sprint apps with package disable Pro, I did turn off Samsung apps as well as I don't really use them, I use whatsapp a lot and also music, but when the phone is idling it consumes only 2 to 3 percent in 12 hours while sleeping, so believe me, disable carrier apps...

Thanks josue89, I reinstalled Package Disabler Pro after having had it prior to doing factory reset. The new version wanted "PD engine" which I installed (I didn't want to do that before, but bit the bullet). I asked for it to disable "bloatware" and it disabled 84 packages. Then I disabled the 2 Sprint apps that I saw: Sprint ID and Sprint Hub. Did you have more than those two? I disabled a couple more Samsung apps. Left Samsung keyboard and others that I thought I would need. Now I am recharging for drain testing tonight.

AM update: No change, maybe worse. About 3% per hour. I haven't disabled everything I could possibly disable. Last time (about 1.5 months ago) I used the list from another thread in this forum. I would have to go revisit that.

update: Definitely worse. Along with the usual Device idle and Android System with 5% and 4%, I also have Android OS with 4%. Using over 3% per hour without any use of phone functions other than looking at power usage every hour or two.

Final update for this go-round: I killed the battery monitor and the "PD engine" and battery is back to 2.5% per hour. There does not seem to be much power saving even by people who might want to think about it.

Hey Eric Peterson,

Just wanted to acknowledge the time and effort you've put into this. I mean, talk about thorough! I've got a galaxy s6 and the battery drain ****s me to no end!
Was considering just getting a new phone and be done with it, though if it's a nougat issue not sure it'll make a difference.... Anyway was wondering what did you end up doing?

Cheers,
Mosh

Hi Mosh. I leave my phone plugged in. In another forum thread they asked my to run the GSAM monitor and send screen shots. I don't know how to take and send screen shots so I have not done that. I'm not sure what they would see other than Device idle and Android System eating up CPU mysteriously.

I just now installed the latest update that showed up. I will update this comment with my latest battery results.

Results: 5 hours, 8% of battery. Better than it was. Battery users are Device idle and Android System (4% and 3%). No others listed. Under Android System there are 100 or 200 "included packages". Although any of those could be the or a culprit, the Device idle usage still requires explanation.

Took about a dozen pictures. That usage caused a pretty big drop looking at the battery graph. Overall today I used 32% in 12 hours. I think the idle use is down a little, but battery usage is still higher especially when doing things with the phone.

3 hours 7% this morning with Device idle and Android System at 3% each, nothing else listed. I don't think there's anything that anyone can do about it.
