Straight from Pixel Help page:

Android version updates
Pixel phones get the latest version of Android directly from Google.

If you bought your device from the Google Store, updates will typically reach your device within 2 weeks. If you bought your device elsewhere, updates can take longer.

They left themselves a wide window.....lol

It's Google but it's sold through Project Fi. The carrier is not irrelevant because until they authorize the release it's not available for download. We have since the same behaviour on the last few updates.

I purchased both our Pixel 3 XL 128's directly from the Google Store and am now using them on Google Fi. So where they were purchased is irrelevant.

Didn't you select Fi when you purchased?
It doesn't really matter... you are using it on Fi so you received it according to the deployment plans for Fi. I'm not sure why we are going round and round on this. I was under the impression you have your update and it wasn't delayed much beyond the first rollout. Contrary to popular belief not everyone gets it at the same time.

The $799 credit to your Fi account only worked if you also added an additional new phone to your Fi account. I wasn't going to add a new account, so I ended up just purchasing the two phones from the Google Store without the Fi account $799 credit.

I've never been one to simply accept something without understanding what's going on. If Updates are in fact sent directly from Google, then how does a provider have any control over what is sent directly from Google as you are suggesting, Mike?

And if you have time here is detailed explanation from an old Reddit thread on how updates work on Pixel devices and they are still subjected to certain carrier approvals, but irrespective of where you buy all updates come from Google servers. Good read if you have time

If you don't want to read thru that long detailed explanation, here is a tldr version:

Conclusion

You Nexus/Pixel phone may be subject to carrier restrictions which delay software updates. You can circumvent this by using ADB with the factory images or OTA images posted on Google's website. Alternatively, if you don't want to use ADB, you can circumvent the carrier association by swapping sims, or removing and performing a factory reset.

But for MOST users, I recommend waiting the additional days or weeks for the update just in case there was a carrier-specific firmware, or carrier-specific bug fix that was needed.
@TraderGary

Read the above....honestly Gary I don't know why they do what they do. I just know what I see and experience. I have drawn my conclusions from observations and it seems that certain carriers get it sooner than others so I conclude there is involvement by the carrier. Could be about liabilities and carriers like to clear it prior to deployment, but that's just my guess. As an example if I buy a fully unlocked version from Google but I stick a TMobile SIM in it...it seems to get it later than Verizon. In the case of the November update the lag wasn't overwhelming. I'm not by any means justifying it. If you want to find out the why...I can only suggest you contact Google or Project Fi but best of luck getting an answer or the real answer.

Haha, get ready to answer the same questions again next month around this time.

Seriously, there really should be a sticky on this. People are pretty pressed about updates.

No disrespect to anyone but my brain is starting to hurt from this topic. Security updates are important to me but if there is a few hours or a couple of weeks between updates I'm good with it. My advice to those that have to have it right away is never sign up for any betas because the security patches are less frequent on beta. That's a whole different topic.

klau25,
I agree! If this link was a sticky, I wouldn't have had to go through all of this to find out how the update process actually works.

Advil or Tylenol ? We got you covered

Now why can't they give a description of what's the fix as soon as you see the download like how Samsung does it .
😔Mike your contagious my brain hurting now 😂😂

I'll see if I can't put something together but it's kind of difficult because it may be difficult to get real facts as opposed to speculative facts.

True. Maybe just couple links to articles, the reddit post you sent and disclaimer? I remember there was an article somewhere of an interview with someone at Google about how update works. I'll try to find it and link it here.

What I was trying to say , is when we get a update it says security will be updated but it dont tells us other minor fixes like the non Google wireless charging fixed in this update with the security fix ....
Example: Samsung updates when they come to the phone will tell you in a brief description that it contains security update with camera fixes and also performance fix . Google doesn't do that .

Few posts above I posted the Reddit link which is pretty detailed and explain exactly how updates work, how carriers are involved etc. If one reads that entirely I think it'll clear most of the regular questions about Pixel updates

There was a description of what the November included besides security.

Yes I'm aware of that link and I even quoted your post to someone. I believe what it says but I'm hesitant to hang my hat on unless I verify it.
