Now iPhone 7 apparently Exploding

Its a simple case of shipping damage. Looks like something quite nasty happened to the thing in transit and it bent the phone. That's really bad juju when it comes to the battery... any sort of physical damage to the cell can cause it to fail and, in many cases, catch on fire.

There's a youtube video where someone took a hammer to a phone to 'test' the shatter resistance of the screen. The make and model doesn't matter, but after smashing the screen, he turned it over and took a few whacks at the back. After a couple of shots, you could see the phone immediately start to swell and then the battery went all Vesuvius and shot out of frame.

Perhaps the benefit of the Samsung recall will be that people will finally start to treat their phones with a minimum level of care and respect, rather than treat them like Fisher Price toys.

No fires this time.

Seriously, I just hope that this reinforces the idea that lithium batteries are not perfect and that defects WILL occur on anything with a lithium battery. They're volatile in nature, and if they are punctured or heated too much, they can rupture and in worst-cases, ignite.

Since we've been asking for higher capacity batteries packed in more dense sizes, the margin for error is getting smaller and smaller. And if something goes wrong, the potential outcome would likely be greater.

Lithium batteries if punctured will explode. It is just the way that technology is. That is definitely shipping damage.

You apparently do not understand online forums. You are clearly posting common sense & that will not be tolerated. Common sense deflates dramatic headlines, turns tin foil hat tuning to something recyclable & the biggest issue is you cannot begin bashing others. ;) :)

Two incidents already... These and future ones will all be "shipping damage" to Apple fans. Some sites covering the iPhone 7 explosions have gone as far as to call lithium battery explosions "normal," where as with Samsung it was Armageddon.

Well, they are right. Phones do go all volcano from time to time. But the issues Samsung had was a matter of frequency... all phones have incidents of fires like this, but they are random and sporadic.. Murphy's Law sort of incidents caused by a laundry list of reasons; cheap charging gear, damage, etc. Samsung had a hundred or so in a span of a couple of weeks that were traced back to a specific manufacturing defect.

Just watched a local news report of an iPhone 6 exploding in a guys pocket as he was sitting in a college class, and reached for a pen. It burned a hole on his jeans. Trying to find a link, but it doesn't look like they published the story on their website. Of course the referenced the Note 7 recall in the story too.

Where was all of this rationalizing with the Note 7? Heck, we had Garage Guy, Jeep Guy and Grandma hollering and the press and a lot of forum folks lapped it up like a kitty with momma cats milk ;)

Those device were pretty messed up structurally too. (Turned out bunk anyway).

We have had iPhone fires on planes, pocket spolders' and hot devices too. Where is the public and media incited outcry?? Double standards much?

Both of my Note 7s had/have no heat or battery issues. Most of the media articles and rationale about the problem were technically comical and recycled the same talking points and feigned indignation. JMO, of course.

Samsung really needs to make sure the Note 7 has no major issues after this recall and that any issues are addressed and resolved through updates. If you think they can just forget the Note 7 and move on to the S8 asap and put the Note 7 behind them are wrong.... Any Note 7 issue will get front page attention and if they don't take of it asap, when the S8 comes out people will look at the Note 7 and say no thank you

Where is the media outrage and Gizmodo trolling to the FAA and any other acronym they could contact or find?

Apple seems a tad rotten, based on same condition and effort against Samsung by the media. Key differnce so far no Jeep Guy, Garage Guy or grandma stirring the media up with non Note 7 caused events.

I guess the media needs the flaming meme's for the drama.

Yeah the media is totally biased for sure like less badgering of iPhone when it did explode in someone's pants

Well the iPhone always puts a hole in you pocket, but this is ridiculous! LOL

Although in this instance, I think the student is at fault: "I've had it for about six months. The only thing that was wrong with it was a simple crack, but I don't see a simple crack causing it to blow up in my pocket."

Yeah, no! I never understood why anyone would keep a phone in their back pocket and constantly sit on it. And I'm sure that "simple crack" created a ticking time bomb. Surprised that this doesn't happen more often. Although if I'm remembering correctly, most of the fires/explosions with iPhones have been the result of damage to the phone prior to the episode.
