I got a USB OTG Cable and downloaded Nexus Media Importer but it won't read my USB drive. Is it because its in NTFS format?

That could very well be the problem. Can you back up your data and then reformat in FAT32?

You need to be formatted to FAT32 or be rooted and use an app like paragon NTFS.

I got FAT32 but Nexus Media Importer will still not read my usb but Nexus picture viewer works.

Hi:

I have a couple of 64gb MicroSd cards formatted with NTFS and have been using them with Nexus Media Importer since it was released on my stock N7 2012 and stock N7 2013 with OTG and now Meenova adaptors.

It could be your OTG cable, I can post the source of mine if you wish, or you might need a powered USB hub to read your drive.
