Sorry to cover the basics, but it's hard to determine exactly what people know. This screenshot shows how to identify whether a WiFi connection is Secured or Open:

If it's Secured, you normally just have to provide the correct (case-sensitive) password and you're good to go. If it's Open, you'll usually see a prompt like this one:

As noted by Trucky, it's pretty common for locations with an Open network to require some form of authentication/acknowledgement, which they usually enforce via web browser redirection - the first time you open a browser, you'll be redirected to their site where you're asked to accept their usage policies, or you'll be prompted to enter your credentials. You'll normally see a notification in the Notification bar (sorry, I don't have a screenshot of that, but it looks like the WiFi icon with a question mark next to it) if that's the case.
It's also possible that the IT folks are enforcing additional security measures, like MAC filtering or VPN - you'd have to get the specifics from them to proceed.
