Occasional No Service - ideas for fixing it?

I have had a weird problem for months now.

Some times my Nexus 6 drops off the cellular network and displays "No Service" in the pulldown menu (and at the top). This will happen 0-5 times a day, following no pattern I am able to spot. The mobile data continues to work. It is just the text/calling, that does not work.

The phone and carrier worked together for about 4 months without incident, then this stared happening after I switched to a different plan with the same carrier (could be a coincidence).

If switch to airplane mode and back again, it comes back on the cellular network in a matter of seconds, and everything works again. The cell service here is perfect, 4-5 bars always.

Here is what I have already tried:
- Clearing the cache in Settings/Storage
- Replacing the SIM card for a new one
- Putting another SIM card (from another carrier) in for a week, no outages
- Putting the SIM card in another phone for a week, no outages

So to conclude:
- The SIM card does not seem to cause problems in another phone
- The phone does not have a problem when using another SIM card
- I have already tried replacing the SIM card, so it seems the carrier/phone combo is the problem (?)

I am completely lost here, no idea what to do.

Does anybody have suggestions, solutions, ideas?

I was having the same issue with my Nexus 6 as well. Whenever the LTE signal was weak, instead of downshifting to HSPA+, 3g or 2g, the phone would just drop carrier. I tried both soft and hard resets, got a replacement AT&T sim and fiddled with APN settings. Nothing worked.

I eventually gave up and got another phone. The Nexus was missing calls and texts so regularly as to be useless. It wouldn't even alert me that I missed a call.

I'm now using a cheapy Blu Studio Energy II that works perfectly. Really a shame but a phone that can't reliably get signal in midtown Manhattan just won't cut it.

I just started having this problem also with my Nexus 6 unlocked Google Play Store version running on AT&T. I don't know if it's the phone or AT&T. I've had this phone for 5 months and this losing all cell signal started about a month ago. I really hope it's not the phone because I have never had a phone this good that I am not interested in anything that's come out so far this past year.

I had this exact issue with my old N6 with T-Mobile. It is really annoying. I found no fix other than replacing the phone. Which was a shame. I loved the N6.

After I posted this, I talked to my carrier's tech support, and they suggested switching to 3G permanently, as this could be related to LTE issues. So far, 48 hours later, I have not had a single "no service" incident. I will keep you posted, if the change is permanent.

I wound up sending mine in for warranty service. To their credit, Motorola sent me what appears to be a new phone. The signal reception problem is, thankfully, not apparent in this one. All good so far.
