I have a sprint samsung galaxy s3 ( SPH-L710 ) that I upgraded to android 4.3 using kies. A few days ago I tried to root the phone by following the directions here : How to Root Galaxy S3 (Sprint) SPH-L710 on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean Firmware - Honai of Android . The procedure went exactly as described until the very end at which point I installed a root checker which told me that I don't have root access. According to comments following the directions, other people have seen the same problem.

Yesterday, I attempted to apply the trwp recovery rom ( openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.1-d2spr.tar ) . Now however, when I attempt to use odin to apply this, odin crashes, instantly, when I press "Start" to initiate the transfer.

Note that odin *did* work when I attempted to root the first time.

Does anyone have any suggestions regarding how to proceed? I would still like to root the phone but I don't know what the next steps should be ( it probably would be useful to be able to get odin working though ).

Right now the phone is working fine.

Thanks.

Which Odin version were you using? I'd recommend using another version of it to see if that helps.
Use v1.85 if it didn't work on 3.07 or vice versa :)

I tried 1.85 and got the same results. Here's a screenshot from the 1.85 attempt at the time of failure. odin_185_screenshot.jpg

That's all I've tried. I don't mind trying other things but it seems like I'm putting my phone at some risk every time I do this so I would like to make intelligent choices about what I try to flash ( or at least not make bad choices :) )

No worries. Would you be willing to try ClockwordMod to see if that works?

It worked! Thanks!

For the record, here's what I did:

cp recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.4.3-d2spr.img recovery.img
tar -H ustar -c recovery.img > recovery.tar

  • Used odin 3.07 to flash the recovery.tar file ( see attached screenshot )

I used the touch version of clockworkmod because I saw that someone else had a similar problem and was able to make things work using the touch version: [Q] Odin 1.85 -- Crashing when hitting "Start" (trying to root 4.0.4) - xda-developers ( but I don't know if that mattered or not ).

The img to tar conversion technique came from here: Clockwork Mod Recovery - Odin Flashable

Thanks again!
