Odin won't recognize Epic

So earlier today I booted up my phone and this android system recovery <3e> screen came up. it won't boot past it and there are many things saying e:failed to open /res/recovery.fstab and e:unknown volume for path. It won't let me factory reset and I figured that if I can get Odin working I can just flash the stock rom and be fine. The problem is that none of the computers that I've tried it on have been able to get Odin working. I have used 3 different USB's, plugged it into every USB port on 3 seperate computers and still I don't get anything from Odin. The only thing I can boot into is download mode but since I can't get into Odin its no help so i don't know what to do from here. Please help I'm going back to school tomorrow and I don't know what else to do.

Try removing the battery and even the SD card and re-connecting. No idea why, but it sometimes helps.

I did that. Even when I goto Device Manager it is not even showing that my epic or anything is connected to my computer

Does the charge LED come on the Epic when you connect it? What drivers you using? If nothing in this thread works [How to] Restore a semi-bricked Epic or Bring it back from the brink! - xda-developers , try Heimdall and see if you have any luck with that.

The charge light doesn't come on and I am running the 64-bit drivers because the computer is a 64 bit vista computer. I have never used heimdall but if my computer won't recognize the Epic how will heimdall be able to.

Hmm, yeah, it seems like there's something physically wrong with your phone. I think you have to take it in to a Sprint store.

Not sure what's wrong with it exactly. They'll prolly give you a refurb if you have the insurance plan. Just make sure you say you weren't rooted or anything that will void your warranty. You could blame it on the OTA update, cause there've been a few people who had bad update files. Good luck.

Not sure if you can still get into CWM. If you can there is one more option....

Follow this thread and especially the part about restoring your phone to stock to be turned in for repair/service... This was made for those who had USB ports go or going out on their device and Odin wouldn't recognize them anymore...

have you tried using different usb cables and/or different computers? My desktop doesn't work for my Epic, but my laptop does. See if switching computers/usb cables may help.

When I rooted, I spent the night before getting all the files I would need and programs loaded and working. My biggest problem was getting my computer to recognize my phone and the drivers to work right. On my daughters computer there is no way to get it to recognize my phone unless I put the phone in download mode. The it finds it every time.

Yea I've used 3 different cables and 2 different computers. I went to the sprint store today and all they did was try a hard reset and than tell me there was nothing they could do. I know I could fix my phone if i could get my computer to recognize it I just don't know why thats not working.

Just stabbing because it hasnt been specifically addressed but did you:

Put your phone in Download Mode:
Make sure the USB cord is unplugged
Remove the battery and microSD card
Plug the phone into Computer (the phone may display a battery on the display this is normal just ignore it and go to the next step)
Hold down the "1" key and the power button.
The phone should now be displaying a Yellow Triangle with Downloading...

Did you plug it directly to the PC with a different cable than Samsung's? I thought I had a bricked Epic because Odin wouldn't recognize it, but that was because I was using the Samsung cable. I tried the Palm Pre cable and it got recognized. However, it kept failingnuntil I plugged it directly to the PC. Seems like it doesn't like USB hubs either...

Odin is a very fussy application but its basically all we have to restore a device to stock or get out of bad situations where CWM won't help..

Its so dependent on the device making a good connection to the computer and drivers, so many other little variables...

Windows XP machines have always been the best luck... It works with Windows Vista and Win 7 but Windows XP has always been the best option.

I am going to find a needle and try that later but yes i have been using different usb cords (i used a cord for the evo, a radioshack cord, and the cord for my epic) and I dont know of anyone who still has windows XP but I am going to try to do it on windows 7 in a little. Does anyone know if this reset button exists or am i just putting a needle into nothing? Thank you all for the help.

I tried heimdall too but it still wouldn't recognize it which makes me think that there is something wrong with the computer seeing the phone? idk
