Official Froyo Update Instructions for Samsung Captivate - It's Here!

I've looked through the pages, but can't find one that addresses my issue.

Updating for me is a nightmare, because I keep getting the "MTP error," that is, Kies can't find my device because it can't install the drivers for it.

I have gone to numerous websites following numerous different steps, among them one suggested connecting in MTP mode and extracting some "FileSearcherForKiesFix", but my PC wouldn't find the phone as a hard drive letter. Another one suggested not letting Kies update, so I uninstalled, re-installed with my Internet disconnected so it couldn't update, then tried again--but again, no luck.

I've been at this for 4 hours, and am still at square 0, and ready to burn the freaking thing in a fire.

Try a different computer if you have one. That seems to fix it with everyone else.

"SGH-I897 could not be upgraded"

Finally have kies recognizing my phone about 50% of the time... That was a few weeks off and on effort and now I get the error above.

I tried taking my battery out and restarting the phone like it told me to but then it just gives me the same error again.

Any ideas running out of patience here.

I finally got it to work, based on this recommendation in a post I started:

Go to settings > applications > development and turn on "USB debugging"

From there, it did just fine.

Questions about Stock installation of Android 2.2 (Froyo)

Samsung has this guide to the stock/not rooted installation of Froyo. I am told to try the update as a way to cure my phone of its baseless demonic ringing. I have everything backed up, but I cannot understand the instructions.

How Do I Update The Software On My AT&T SGH-i897 (Captivate) Phone To Android 2.2 (Froyo) Through Kies Mini For PC?

For example, in the Requirements Section

"Any Previous Samsung Kies Software Should Be Removed" -- How? I know I have Kies as listing on my phone (not Kies mini). Is this listing removable? I have also read that the upgrade doesn't go well if Kies mini detects other Kies software. Thanks

Does anyone know how this is to be done?

Thanks in advance,
SPerson

I took that to mean removing Kies from my PC prior to installing mini Kies which is what I did and had no problems updating to Froyo.

Kies mini upate.

New update is out 1.00.11035_8. Still can't update. Even using the debugging trick. Running Verizon 2.2.

I may sound stupid but you have to use the UK version of kies to access the update. the US version does not show an update.

According to the update instructions (link posted several posts back on this thread) you are supposed to use Mini Kies not Kies. The instructions also state that you should remove any Kies software installed on your computer before downloading mini Kies. I followed those instructions and had no problem downloading the Froyo update.

just did this with my wife's phone.(i know i'm late, but she was fighting me on it) now she's saying her phone is slower, force closing, lagging, freezing.

anyone have any thought or fixes? or experienced this themselves?

Factory reset was a very common fix for post-update. I would try that first.

Re: Official Froyo Update Instructions for Samsung Captivate - It

I think it should also be mentioned in the first post, that if you use TB to backup all your stuff...that AFTER you update to 2.2 and use TB to restore...you only restore User apps/data.

More specifically, if you restore the system data for the phone, its not compatible with 2.2 and will cause a FC every time you get a phone call.

I learned this the hard way and had to go back to and redo it all; which was fine because I ultimately decided to go back to stock with Odin and then flash recent Cognition. Much faster and snappier and all the tweaks are nice as well.

Looking for a good theme that is compatible with Cog now.
