Official Signal Strength and Reception Thread

I got my Nexus on Tuesday and had serious issues with losing connection. Went back to Verizon on Wednesday. They switched out the sim card and reactivated. I am still dropping service, but not as bad and not as long. When I am places I can connect to wifi, it isn't an issue, but I am going to give it the weekend. If things don't improve, I will be exchanging for something else since I will still be in the 14 day return window.

Are you still able to get calls and send tests? Mine looks like no signal a lot but it still works fine. It has even been better some flashing jelly belly to it, might be worth a shot of you like the phone besides the signal issue.

How Do I Tell Voice Signal Strength?

Now that my wife's Razr Maxx has been updated to ICS, I can see that LTE signal strength is fairly close between the two phones. Is there a way to see the voice/CDMA signal strength?

My friend has this phone and says that the reception is excellent, only if you turn on airplane mode then turn it off again!

On my Original EVO 4G my signal sucks -101 to -103 and if I am lucky sometimes -98.
Sprint is giving me an Airave no charge.

No, it would drop completely and have an "x" on the signal bars, even after changing out the sim card. I ended up having a defective phone and was switched out with a new one at my local verizon store.

We have two iPhones and two Galaxy Nexus and one HTC Incredible.

WIFI
Only the two GNex have issues. Neither work on WiFi, 3G or 4G very well.

In the same room as the wireless router comparing the HTC side by side with Gnex
HTC = -47dBm 100% strength and full bars
GNex = -58dBm 100% strength and 2 bars

In the very next room over
HTC = -70dBm 80% strength and full bars dropping down one occasionally
Gnex =-83dBm 54% strength and 1 bar dropping to none occasionally

BLUETOOTH
I can not use the GNex in my car streaming to bluetooth at all. It cuts out, gets better for awhile and then cuts out chopping off the words consistently. I how have an audio cable.

The HTC has worked for a year on the same radio and still works fine in the car using bluetooth.

Cellular
I can make calls from my home on the GNex and have not experience any real issues except the bars are non existent. So reports of bars being low seem accurate.

My HTC has two bars at home.

However, even in full 4G territory I have experienced many times trying to dial a number and it just sits silent. The contact picture is there and the RED indicator showing that is trying to connect, but no sound and it just times out and goes back to the Contact Name. I have turned off the phone and on, but it didn't seem to fix. I try to dial a dozen times, even walking around the area to see if I can shake something up... nothing. I wait awhile and it finally seems to work.

I took the phone in during my 14 day period and they exchanged sim. No change....

I took it back and Verizon said that I could not turn it back in and wait for Samsung SIII since it wasn't shipping at that time. My 14 days are up, barely, but I'm really frustrated.

So I rooted and installed 4.1 and still no change... so don't get your hopes up.... unless 4.1.1 is magic....

Changing ROMs does not affect your phones radios. To change the radio and potentially improve your reception issues, check out this thread. Keep in mind that every phone is different, so results may vary. The latest official radios for the Verizon GNex are the FC04/FC05.

Hope this helps!

I am a former Galaxy Nexus on Verizon owner. Go get yourself a Galaxy S3 the reception and signal strength is so much better. I left Verizon because of how they allowed the Galaxy Nexus to just languish in dispare from December 2011 to June 2012. The 4.0.4 software update made the reception better but by that time I was to bitter. I since June 28th has moved on to Tmobile and gosh I am so proud of this network on Tmobile. My Galaxy S3 gets great speeds and great signal strength plus true 4g coverage in my area signal strength is exceptional. I wish you luck my friend

Let's count the ways in which you've got things screwed up:
1. You're comparing a SGSIII to a Galaxy Nexus, which I'm pretty sure have completely different radios.
2. You're comparing a phone that's been out no more than 3 weeks to a phone that's been available for upwards of 8 months. Of course the newer phone will have better connectivity.
3. You're comparing GSM/HSPA+ to CDMA/LTE, which are very different technologies.
4. You're comparing T-Mobile to Verizon. While T-mobile may have more localized coverage to where you specifically are all day, every day, Verizon has wider coverage, and wider coverage means more people on the same network. That's a fact.
5. Considering the 4G standard was originally around 100 Mbps, no one has "true 4G"
6. What you fail to realize is, just because you have "exceptional" signal strength in your area, doesn't mean everyone in the US has the same, especially on T-Mobile.
7. Given that there's no word in the English language spelled "despare" and you're supposedly typing this on a GSIII which has autocorrect, puts your credibility level around 50% (or less) automatically.

I have been on all of the carriers in 2yrs and have experienced plenty of devices that's well known in android land. Verizon may have a big foot print with lte but the problem with it's shinny new Lte network is that NONE of their devices work the same on the same network.. Why is that.. Plus they have too many issues with it's network that too is well known. Plus we won't even get into the CDMA vs HSPA/GSM difference.

Let's see, less than 12 months ago you had a "legendary" Evo 3D on Sprint that you said would be a "flagship device well into 2012". Then, for no more than 3 weeks you had a SGS2II Skyrocket on AT&T, less than the 30 day return window. I wouldn't call that "owning" a phone, more like renting or leasing, if even that much. After that you had a LG Revolution on Verizon, again for no more than 3 weeks, for which you traded in a Galaxy Nexus. Now you're on T-Mobile with a SGSIII. I state all this hum-drum because, as quoted above, you say you've been on "all of the carriers". So where's Cricket, Virgin Mobile, Metro PCS, Boost Mobile, US Cellular, Simple Mobile, and all the other carriers that fall under that "all" category? They are indeed carriers, after all. You have no clue what you speak of.

but the problem with it's shinny new Lte network is that NONE of their devices work the same on the same network.. Why is that.
Hmmm, as I've stated many times when you asked this stupidly simplistic question, maybe it's because an HTC phone has different radio hardware than a Samsung phone. Maybe it's because a Samsung phone has different radio hardware than a Motorola phone. Maybe it's because an LG phone has different radio hardware than an HTC phone. The list goes on. Surely you don't think every single phone from the myriad of different manufacturers would perform exactly the same on the same network? If that's what you're looking for, get the iPhone you so despise. That's the only way to have a consistent experience.
Additionally, some phones have problems that other phones of the exact same kind don't have. Some Galaxy Nexus owners in the UK initially reported on the issue where putting another cell phone next to a certain spot on the GN would cause hardware buttons to be triggered without them ever being physically pushed. This affected a few users, not all.

Plus we won't even get into the CDMA vs HSPA/GSM difference
Which is why your comparison of signal from Verizon to T-Mobile is utterly pointless and moot. Congratulations. You've just proved me right.

All I can say is lol

Yea I think they are going to change that old saying "hell hath no fury like a woman scorned", to "hell hath no fury like an android user talking about a phone other than the one they own".

I don't care what kind of phone you have, that's not how I judge someone's worth or intelligence.

Contests on getting mentioned on android central blog. I read about it on pulse, it was About the AOAP build tutorial on the nexus. Thanks again dmmarck

I am on the GNex and where I am, 1.5 miles from a VZW tower I only get two bars on 3G. This phone has the worse signal strength of any VZW phone I have had over the last four plus years. This has been going on since I moved. The techs know there is a problem with signal strength and data connections which I loose several time a day for hours, only get data when on WIFI. The replacement phone was even worse than my original phone which the tech had me keep and return the replacement. Very disappointed in Samsung and Verizon.

Got my nexus on Friday from ebay and it is literally useless with no signal reception possible. I have been on Verizon for 15 years and have had Dinc, Tbolt (day of release), Trophy and then a string of Iphones: 3, 3GS, 4 and 4s.

The Nexus has no coverage anywhere in my house where all my other phones had full bars including full 4G in the Tbolt. I had to set up my works network extender just to use this phone this weekend in my house.

I have replaced the SIM card with no change. I have tried about 8 different ROMs including 4.0.4 and many 4.1s and 4.1.1 with no change.

They are sending me a refurb Monday. I really hope this is a hardware issue for this particular phone and not as big an issue as reported here and elsewhere.

Phone has a 11.11 build date and .09 hardware baseband version.

I had a nexus for a week. In that week, I replaced the sim card and the entire phone. Nothing worked. I couldn't even keep wifi signal with it. I returned it for a SIII and haven't had an issue.
