I *thought* I was ready to pull the trigger on the G2. But now the Nexus 5 throws a wrench into my plans.

Nexus 5 pros:
  • Stock Android 4.4
  • fast updates
  • cross carrier compatability
  • lower full price

LG G2 Pros:
  • bigger screen, 5.2 vs. 4.95, a whole quarter inch!
  • bigger battery, 3000 vs. 2300
  • knock on/buttons on back, just seems cool and appeals to me

Help me out here! Who's choosing which, and why?

If it's me, I'm going Nexus and not looking back. I suppose if you really like the larger screen the G2 would be appealing, but it's not like the 5" N5 screen is tiny...I'm not sure about how they actually compare in terms of device size, but I for one don't like going much larger than 5" for a device I have to carry around with me every day.

The biggest thing for me is the updates. Since I've owned a Nexus device, it's the one thing I really love. It's awesome to be able to see all the news about the upcoming features when Google drops new Android versions on us, and know that it will only be a few days until I'm able to take advantage of them on my own device, as opposed to knowing I'll have to wait a few months and even then it's a "maybe".

For me, it's like the old saying goes, "once you go Nexus, you never (want to) go back"

EDIT: I realize this probably won't be a popular response given that this is posted in a G2 subform. Don't get me wrong, I think the G2 is an awesome device, OP probably couldn't go wrong with either choice...but that is my opinion.

Honestly the only positive for the Nexus 5 for me is the faster updates. The G2 has a bigger screen, bigger battery(which for the intent of using this phone I think is a huge difference) better camera, and with the same performance specs as the Nexus. It was an easy choice especially when I paid $0 for the G2. Sure it doesn't come with Kit Kat, but I don't care enough to spend $400 for that...

The only other item is wireless charging. I miss it on my Lumia 920

That's true forgot about wireless charging. But still rather have the much larger battery and have to charge it less....

Yeah I was pulling my hair out the last few hours,lol... I almost bought the N5 but couldn't hit the pay now button then looked and the G2 gets about 2-1/2 to 3 hours more Wi-Fi web browsing time and to me that's huge!!! Think I'll keep my BB pre order. Anyways I think the N5 is now sold out because it says 2-3 weeks to leave warehouse. Should've bought one when I could and sell it,lol

I had decided that I would be ordering the g2 tomorrow and now am also conflicted... mainly concerned about the fact that I've been reading that LG 's are not keeping up with the updates. Does that mean that we will have to wait for Kit Kat if we choose this phone? This might sound like a stupid comment but if LG made the nexus 5 then why wouldn't the G2 also be getting updated as quickly as the nexus? I realize that nexus is pure android and the G2 has LG 's ui on it but are they really that different that it would hold up the G2 from getting updates?

I was also conflicted for a while but after breaking it down Better Cameras, a MUCH better battery, larger screen! VS wireless charging & Stock Google / Faster Updates... My thoughts are to Remember the CyanogenMod Option! Also more phone for less money (esp if you take advantage of the $99 upgrade price at BestBuy)! You can't go wrong with MORE for LESS can you?

Just root the phone and get cyanogenmod 10.2 same experience even faster updates with all the killer g2 features, plus Yeah the updates on the Nexus will be faster but they still have to get through carriers, look at the galaxy nexus it barely got 4.3

While the N5 is attractive, the G2 has so many good points. Better battery, camera, screen size. I read on another forum that LG will update the G2 to Kit Kat later in November. Could just be a rumor. Plus the G2 has the LTE Tri-band for Sprint Spark. I probably won't see the tri-band where I live, but they are promising 100 large cities in the US will see it by the end of 2014. Not sure if the N5 has Tri-Band.

Looks like Phandroid, AndroidPolice and others have ripped some of the best parts of N5 that you can install on most android phones.

I think you guys are right, plus I just checked the pre-order for the nexus 5 on sprints site and they are only offering the 16gb version. I really can't deal with only 16 on board if there is no expansion for sd. So to me it seems like there are more cons then pros. Guess G2 is still the sweetest treat :)

The N5 has Tri-Band and Sprint has confirmed that it wil support Sprint Spark, after an early 2014 update.

The N5 32gb version sold on Google Play works on Sprint, but yeah dropping $400 isn't too appealing when you're ready for a contract discount or One Up.

I hate it when people make compelling arguments!

Camera is 13 MP on the back versus 8 MP on Nexus 5, and while that's not actually a big difference with such a tiny sensor I've heard the camera software is better on the G2.

This is a pretty small advantage, but I don't think anyone has called out that the LG G2 has an IR blaster and the Nexus 5 doesn't. This isn't a reason to buy the phone, but it's a nice perk if you have a lot of remotes at home and no universal remote.

IMHO, the bigger screen, better battery life, and better camera outweigh having stock Kit Kat Android and wireless charging, but I'm also biased against upgrading Android on my phone (past the version it ships with, I mean) after the debacle I had with going from Gingerbread to ICS on my Galaxy S2 *shudders*

So it seems like it's down to software vs. hardware. G2 hardware is best. N5 software is best. What's more important to you?

As an aside, people are saying just root and rom the G2. But if we went that route, would it receive the Sprint Spark update?

I would argue that the G2 software is better than the nexus plain.android

I'm not so sure there is a "Sprint Spark update". You already have the hardware in the phone and if the radio is disabled for the extra signal then I believe it's just a simple matters of accessing the dialer and enabling it. I don't have the G2 yet, but as with other phones I'm sure you'll find the codes on xda's to enable the appropriate radio(s).

So I'm not worried about that.

When you say killer G2 features, are you referencing things such as knock on?

A simple CM install will give me essentially vanilla android + knock on (and maybe the other LG features)?

G2 is going to be my first android phone and I haven't been a power user since my HTC Touch Pro II, so I'm a bit new to this (again).
