Ok... again... Auto-sync and Background Data... what?

I Googled and read answers to this question but it left me confused. I read that if you have Auto-Sync off, you won't get Gmail alerts. But mine was off and I did. I also got Touchdown and K9 updates. However Yahoo Mail did not update. What will I get if Auto-Sync on? Seems pointless.

Don't even get me started on background data... no idea how that differs.

This just isn't clear.

OH... and not sure it matters because my Rezound won't even let me use Auto-Sync anyway. It just shuts it off.

Ok... I just caught it on so it appears to be controlled by some other force. It turned off again by itself.

That force might be your power setting. Performance toggles auto-sync on, normal toggles off.

So... on the Rezound, there is no way to have auto-sync remain on continuously?

(not that I want to, just curious)

Put the phone into performance mode.

Ok. Sorry. Now I am confused. My phone is in performance mode. It is toggling auto sync. Therefore, there is no way to have it continuously on because performance mode doesn't do it. It toggles. Setting it to performance mode is NOT causing continuous sync.

So HTC has devised a toggle method that works pretty well without auto sync being always on.

When the phone is in performance mode, all setting should be allowed. So if it's in performance mode, if you turn on sync it should stay on. You're not using a 3rd part app to manage battery are you?

OH! Yes I am. I am trying "Juice Defender" - I didn't even think of that. Thanks! If you have sync staying on, JD must be playing with the setting.

Yep, that's what JD does.

So that would be a good thing in terms of power saving. I am still trying to determine the benefit of JD. I read your reply to my other post about it so I know you have a different approach. I am not getting this mythical 8-10 hours out of my phone.

I may not recall which other reply you're talking lol. Haven't finished my coffee yet...

Anyway if you're looking to save battery life on the phone there are a few things of note

The screen usually uses a fair amount of power. Check to make sure it's not set to full brightness 24/7. For me, the automatic setting has been sufficient.
Avoid using live wallpapers. These use extra power over whatever static wallpaper you may choose.
There's an art to a dark wallpaper. The darker your wallpaper, the less energy required to power the appropriate pixels.

Do you leave bluetooth or wifi on when it's not in use? (Probably not, just covering bases).

I think the biggest thing for me in particular extending my battery life to 13 hours was rooting and removing the bloat.

Yup. Doing all of that except the root. I'm on the verge of rooting. I rooted my last phone. I actually like Sense. I wanted to wait and make sure everything was was working normally before I rooted. If that's how you get the battery life, that's where I'm headed.

Yep, root and I suggest the app "Battery Left"

It's a widget that essentially gives you a "your battery has this % charge level, and that equates to about X hours Y minutes of use by your average usage stats."

Thank you!

One double check.... if I root, I don't lose Sense? Its only if I apply a custom ROM?

Oh... and will I still get the official ICS update or will I be dependent on a ROM for that?

If you root you will not lose sense.

If you remove bloat apps, you may not be able to install the update until you restore those apps.(This is how it worked with my Droid X)

If you're concerned about have the OTA update, make sure you backup any app you remove (best app to do both backup and remove is Titanium Backup).

Additionally, if you root I'd suggest you make a backup of your stock setup first, and then try Scrosler's Clean ROM. It still has Sense, but most of the background services installed by VZW are gone, as well as other bloat apps. If you need facebook on the phone, there is a social app pack you'll need to install but that's all detailed in his thread in the rooting and roms subsection at the top of this forum.
