Ok Samsung its September....

I was having major GPS issues but I have solved it in 95% of all cases using the following steps:

I used the FIX as detailed here on AC

I downloaded and Installed GPS Status from the Market Place (free)

I use it to get lock then flip over to Navigator.

I just took a long road trip (21 hours each way) and the GPS works flawlessly

it will be out in september, samsung is pushing the lag fix out along with froyo at the same time..... have a little patience.

Evidence for this? The Samsung twitter accounts have said that the September Froyo is for the international Galaxy S.

I have to laugh sometimes at people that say they are going camping or hiking into the woods and wish that the gps worked. Anyone who depends on the gps on a phone going into the wilderness is a fool. If you use it for that and get lost, you don't deserve anyone to risk their lives to rescue you.
Now if your a city person and want to find a restaurant, movie or street address, then your right about having a phone with a working gps. Driving in your car buy a tomtom or some other real gps device.
I have not found a phone yet that will pinpoint your exact position like a tomtom or one of the other's. If you depend on it that much they do make hand held ones where the battery will last way longer then your phone will.
Still I'm also upset it does not work and it should have worked from the get go. I just got one of those surveys from att. Do it and get a chance at a prize bs. I told them that the gps is worthless and it borders on fraud. That I am holding onto my phone since they and Samsung have told me it will be fixed sometime in Sept.

Fraud? That's quite bold don't you think? You weren't tricked or anything. You were just a dumbass that didn't properly review the device... GPS is fine. Everyone needs to be a little more proactive with their phones and make it work for them. Every single phone I have ever had I have had to work and make it my own and make it work great (except for iphone 4, ****in dropped calls and i hate cases).

Again you need to be less vague. "Make it work for you" When I buy a device I expect it to work like advertised. And waiting two month to get GPS to get a lock is NOT like advertised. I do not expect to unbox my device and then have to apply fixes, or wait for them to be released to use the device as I intended.

Besides, it's not like Samsung can force ATT to release it. We're still going to have to wait on ATT.

Regarding the GPS problems, I just compared my Captivate to a coworker's Droid 2 and my phone locked faster (15 seconds compared to almost a minute on the Droid 2) and was about a block closer to my location (inside large building).

Custom roms, kernels, fixes. do some research man. And there has not been one ad for the captivate about GPS. So you got what you paid for. simple as that. The difference between us is that I will work on my phone and you will just give up.

ATT maps, ATT Navigaor, Google maps, Turn by turn navigation. If the GPS doesn't work reliably, none of those work.

And this statement that because they didn't ADVERTISE something means anything they delivered is all that I paid for is just crazy talk. You expect that kind of childish nonsense from iPhone users, but not from Android users.

We have a right to expect the hardware to work out of the box. The fact that they didn't mention the power button in the advertising does not mean it can fail and we can't complain. Same for the GPS chip.

If the GPS does not work then the customer did NOT GET WHAT THEY PAID FOR.

The user should not have to void the warranty to get the device toe work.

But hey, thanks for carrying water for ATT. Try not to be such a shill.

Okay folks we are over 30% into September, no Froyo, no GPS fix, and not even an update from either Samsung or AT&T. Not surprised...and wont be surprised if I'm back here towards of the end of Sept posting the same thing.

There is no reason to expect Froyo in september - they only said the international Galaxy S would have it. Samsung twitter accounts have said there is no US release date yet. As for GPS fix, the have acknowledged that they are working on it. I will give them the benefit of the doubt for now and see what happens at the end of September.

If GPS does not work, AT&T and Samsung have a legal obligation to take the device back and offer a refund. There are legal precedents around merchantability and fitness of purpose. Many have said that AT&T is already taking the phone back past the 30 day window.

Since this GPS chip is used successfully in other products, i believe that this is a software issue that will be fixed in the next few weeks.

^^^I agree, me coming from BlkBerry(old 8310, Bold 9700). I used ATT Navi. on both with "no problems" getting locks on sats...no probs. I shouldn't have to tweek a phone "out the box" for a feature it came with, to work. For those of you who like going in an replacing Roms, Kernels etc.. That's fine but I'm not that person. If my gps worked, this phone would be perfect, for me. I honestly don't need "FROYO" though it would be great to have at some point. This phone with gps problems is better than my old BlkBerrys, but they(Blkberry) never gave me gps problems. Hopefully Samsung will do right by all of us with this problem and resolve this... -_-

Go check out xda developers there is a new firmware that dropped i believe a test build. They walk you through it. I believe and its a candidate for an update. I loaded it and it says i897ucjh7 update 1. I have used the gps and get a lock in seconds. Now heres the important part...i maintained that lock driving around and did not drop once. I used it last night and it worked perfectly. Rerouted quickly and no overshooting turns. Take a look.

Glad you mentioned JH7. I was tempted to try it but for whatever reason, the XDA site is down. That being said, I loaded SRE 1.2.3 onto my phone, and I was able to get a GPS lock inside my house. So if you are daring, I think either option is worth checking out.

yeah the xda site is funky right now...not sure why maybe maintenance? sre is pretty good but does not work on jh7 as of yet.. however unleash the beast does. im loving this update so far and totally recommend it if your up to it for a solid gps fix. locking does not seem to be a major issue but maintaining that lock is. do it lol :D

Would it be possible to get a link the xda page? Thanks!
