My own preference is to double tap to close the screen but I am also aware that occasional use of the physical button on the side is perhaps advisable to make sure it does not seize up through non-use - say once a day. What do other people prefer to do?

I have also just added an app to the home screen to allow me to force Lockdown mode (over-riding Smart Lock rules) so that I can do that without doing a long press of the physical button. Again, I feel more comfortable doing it that way.

I use double tap to turn the screen off. I also cycle the phone off and on using the physical button occasionally.

I typically use the physical Power button to turn off the screen on my Pixel 3 XL.

When ON, double tap for screen off.
When OFF/locked, single tap for Ambient Display and double tap for Lock screen.

Power button when locking directly from an opened app or when I need to unlock using PIN instead of FPR. Also when I restart, want to open the Recovery menu or the double click to open the camera.

Double tap to wake, and Nova action for double tap to sleep. I use the double tap power for camera somewhat frequently, and for screenshots. I set up my double taps to save on pushes to the button. It's not that I don't like the physical power button. In fact, it's the opposite, I like it. I set mine up that way because the power button is sometimes the first button to have issues from wear and tear.
