On screen keyboard is broken of using a usb mouse with keyboard on the back

On my Google TV dongle I found that if I have a usb keyboard plugged in I encounter issues with using the on screen keyboard, and some places neither the onscreen or usb keyboard are functional, like trying to search for an app in the play store. Is there a workaround for this or should I just use a remote that doesn't have a keyboard? I need a usb one as I use a Smart board as my tv and the input menu requires using the directional pad to navigate, so this is the only way to have only one remote.

The Chromecast is not designed to use external input devices, so any use of them will be buggy. You're way better off using another mobile device in the same WiFi network and use the keyboard/mouse there.
