One M9 owners: What are your HTC One M9 first impressions?

Re: HTC One M9 First Impressions

Yep, I just checked that, and it's there. Nice find!

[edited by Mod]...next time he should probably not use a phone with a cracked screen to use as a comparison. That's just tacky.

I hate when people say "it feels more solid in the hand." What else is it supposed to feel like in your hand? And its made out of the same material as the M8...aluminum. They feel the exact same...lol.

Sir Gruff,
I have seen your comments in this particular arena for some time now. I would have to speculate that you are somewhat biased when it comes to the subject of htc devices. I am not sure why this is the case. But you must have your reasons. At various points in time, you have claimed to own both an htc m7 and m8. I believe those claims to be highly doubtful. Unlike you, I do not intend to insult or offend in any fashion. The problem with your comments is that they are not informative. They are simply aggressively stated opinions slanted consistently in the same direction. There is not a cracked screen in the shots as you attest. That is a movie poster which was originally sold by the manufacturer in a folded format. The lines are the fold lines. The phrase "feels solid in the hand" refers to build quality.

Referring to others' posts as "tacky" or making fun of their way of describing their user experience would not appear to conform with the guidelines of this forum and serves no purpose in the process of informing those of us who are possibly interested in the pros & cons of the htc one m9. It appears that you are only interested in attacking anyone who has anything positive to say about the m9. You have made so many posts (99) that I have to wonder how much spare time someone such as yourself could possibly have. Samsung has been assessed a hefty fine for paying bloggers to comment negatively on htc flagship devices. Perhaps with their deep pockets, this practice has not ceased.

While I agree with your assessment, it's not worth your time to respond to this guy. He's been banned at least 5 or 6 times under different user names over the course of the past month or so. If you see posts from someone that sound like the same guy, just hit the Report button and the mods will take care of it.

I ordered the M9 developer edition in gunmetal grey last Friday and it arrived yesterday. My first impression was - WOW. The build quality is superb. I checked for some things that others had found, like slightly raised edges, soft buttons, larger gaps in some areas, etc. Nothing. The phone is beautiful. I popped the SIM out of my M7 and was excited to get up and running on the M9 when, ooops, the M9 requires a nano-SIM.

My phone is part of our small business plan, so after 45 minutes of working with AT&T on the phone, I was finally added to our account as an "authorized order taker", which cleared me to go to the AT&T store and get a new nano-SIM for the phone. I picked it up last night, got the phone alive and I'm now transferring content/settings/apps from the M7.

I did have the chance to take a picture of a friend in lower light at the pub last night, and I can tell you this, the picture was FAR better than what I would have been able to get with the M7. I have followed the XDA thread regarding camera settings, in fact it actually removed my last concern I had with the phone, and so I am confident that the M9 will receive further updates to improve the point-and-shoot functionality of the camera.

I traded the galaxy s6 for an m9. I think the battery life on this phone is much better. The camera issues are overrated and sense is a hundred times better than touchwiz.

I was always an HTC guy. EVO etc. Got the S4 a while back and always said my next phone I'm going back to HTC. Well I'm typing this on an M9!!

So glad to see sense 7.0. TW was horrible.

My thoughts on this M9 having it about 12 hours.

Lots of good for sure.
BAD:: phone does get hot even with power saver. And YES really hate to say it...OMG the camera STINKS! My S4 took way better pictures. Ill wait for the 14 days hoping for a camera fix. Otherwise its going to be returned ...:(

I'm planning to return the T-Mobile version and order the unlocked version tomorrow. Something about being a carrier version I don't like, always buy unlocked models when I have a choice and made a mistake not doing the same for M9. Even a small camera update is delayed for a week when all other models have it. I can imagine future software updates being delayed by the useless carriers. Unlocked model here I come, with S6 I don't have a choice for unlocked model but when HTC provides the option I'm going to take that.

Will have to pay $45 restocking fee but my mistake so can't complain too much I guess. Don't understand why carriers have so high restocking fee.

The camera does indeed suck and HTC have never made a good camera. I rarely use my camera anyway so the M9 is still on my radar. The issue is I don't think it's worth the extra £$ over the M8 - all things considered it's probably a better performer too. This year's flagships have been a letdown. The S6 battery is terrible and it still lags and stutters (typical Touchwiz).

Since most purchases are made on the back of reviews, and I won't be owning 10 devices at a time to compare camera quality, and the consensus is the camera is under par for a flagship, and that it is nowhere near the league of the S6/iPhone 6 cameras, then yes I would go along with the camera sucks. Why are there so many users complaining of poor camera then.

Yes those are nice photos, but even the crappiest camera can take some good photos if you work at it and get the right shot. The S6 and iPhone 6 are good point and shoot cameras where the consensus is that the HTC One M9 is not and requires a lot more work.

HTC has never made a good camera, let alone a class leading one like Samsung so let's not debate that. When you think "HTC" and "camera" we automatically adjust our expectations because they have historically sucked at making cameras.

Don't cherry pick day shots which are the M9's strength. Low light and video footage is bad. End of story.

The only thing I disagree with is the actually software app is outstanding. I prefer it over the Nexus, iPhone, Samsung or any other brand. The manual controls are great and the ease and flow of changing cameras and settings are well laid out. The problem is the firmware and the hardware. They just can't seem to get that right. They should have included OIS, and not engaged in the pixel race and put in a f/1.9 or 1.7.

I'm sorry but a camera that sucks or is crappy would not be able to yield adequate to good results under any conditions regardless of the user's intervention. To say that the default software settings for the camera are what handicap it's performance is one thing or the lack of OIS compromises the video quality, would be a more accurate assertion. Once you make a statement like that and add an exception to your point using the word "but", then how can you make a blanket statement like that and it be legit?

Would it have been better had he posted all poor quality shots? I could see if they were post-processed, then I'd see your point. If anything you are the one cherry picking if you conveniently choose to ignore the good results and concentrate your attention on the poor shots. That is just clearly driven by bias.

Our expectations differ. Yes you can work and get a perfect shot, but most of the time in real-life usage this means you'll miss the magic moment. We're not always shooting static scenery. A point-and-shoot should take good photos most of the time and this is what the iPhone is renowned for despite only having an 8 MP camera; it's versatile and quick. The HTC One can't do this. I have the M7 which has a terrible camera but even with that you can get a good shot, but it's absolutely a disaster of a camera in comparison to other flagships. All the reviews point to the same thing for the M9 - it's good in brightly lit environments, but otherwise falls apart, whereas the S6/iPhone 6 do not. I'm sure the M9 is great compared to a budget phone, but we're talking flagships here so our expectations should be higher.

I have a very active toddler and to be quite honest, neither me nor my wife have yet to miss a "magic moment" because the camera "sucks". It is a very capable camera with snappy software running it. The reviewers have the unique (and to a fault) advantage of getting to play with and review ALL the new toys. So when the come across a camera as good as the iPhone or S6 of course their view of a lessor product will be jaded and the faults will be magnified and good overlooked.

The M9's camera is not the best of the flagships but it is more then adequate to sit on a flagship device. And I'm sorry to every one jumping ship simply because of the camera... not a very good reason in my opinion. Unless you are planning on taking professional and blowing them up to 11 X 18 to put on your wall, the camera on the M9 is very capable of producing very nice photos and print extremely nice quality 5 X 7's and 8 X 10's and good enough 11 X 18's.

I would reserve judgement of the camera until you've used it in real-life.

Ahh ok, I get where you're coming from. For what it cost and it being the top of the line HTC device, you and just about every other person who is disappointed with the camera of the M9, expected better from HTC. In that sense, yes it should perform admirably in all conditions to be considered a great camera. I just wouldn't call it crappy in my opinion, since it can deliver good results, until the ambient lighting goes down. My mistake if I came off too sharp with my reply.

Sorry but you are wrong. Some of us leave our homes when it is dark and I have yet to see any evidence that the M9 is capable, so yes that would be cherry picking knowing what the inherent flaw of the device is and just posting sunshine pics. I am waiting and hoping to be proven wrong.
