OnePlus 10 dropped in water

I bought a brand new OnePlus 10 Pro 5G two months ago. My kid accidentally dropped the phone into a bucket of water and now its not working. Though the phone came with a one year warranty, the company warranty policy says this will not be covered in that. What can I do about this? Is my phone beyond repair now? Any advise?

Unfortunately it's hard to tell unless someone actually opens it up and checks it. The damage may just be moisture creating shorts and causing the phone to nor turn on (and that MAY go away once completely dry), or that could have caused further damage (i.e. burned out board, components, etc.). Water might also have damaged the battery cell, or the impact of the drop might have caused damage or a disconnection of the display, etc.

If you can't get it to a repair shop soon, I'd suggest the age-old trick of keeping the device off and disconnected in a bag of rice for a day or two and then try again.

Welcome to Android Central! I moved this from the OnePlus X forum to the OnePlus 10 Pro forum.

Unfortunately, no phone manufacturer that I'm aware of covers water damage in the warranty. It's IP68, but that's a water resistance rating, and does not guarantee that a phone is waterproof. It'll reduce the risk of water damage, but damage can still occur for various reasons (e.g., if the phone had any prior trauma causing even tiny cracks that could let water in, or if the water exposure exceeded the strict conditions that IP ratings are tested against, like increased pressure or salinity). There's not much you can really do besides bring it to a repair shop. You could try the method here, but it's a bit of a longshot: [GUIDE] Oh, no! My Phone got Wet! - Android Forums at AndroidCentral.com

The only variant that has an official IP rating is TMobile variant that I am aware of. I'd recommend the rice solution personally

Let the phone sit for a long while before you mess with it. You want it to be completely dry before messing with it. How long was it in the water?

No phone manufacturer will cover water damage even if it has water resistant rating , none have water proof.

When an electronic device like a phone gets wet and shuts off, the common reaction is to immediately try and turn it back on, and then charge it to try and get it to turn on. Those are actually the worst possible things to do. It's best to have a spare backup phone around, dry the wet phone off thoroughly, pull the SIM card out and dry it off for the spare phone, leave the SIM tray out of the wet phone, get a blow dryer on low heat, and take as long as you're willing to, to warm up and dry out the phone.. being sure to direct plenty of air into the SIM card slot.

Then put it in rice for a few days, then another round with the blow dryer. That's not guaranteed to fix it, but it's worked for me. Trying to turn on and charge a wet phone causes short circuits everywhere, and can short out and destroy the battery instantly.

The oneplus 10 has no IP rating in the first place.
As stated previously, IP rating doesn't make it serviceable from a warranty standpoint. And there is 1 variant that IS IP rated, which is the T-Mobile variant.

What an awful thing to have happened! Please keep us posted, OP. Unfortunately, water damage is one of those no-go zones for warranties and the like. :(

Hi, so sorry to hear that. These things are bound to happen with kids around. I have had a similar experience, but when I purchased my OnePlus 9T, I had also bought an add-on OnePlus Care which came with accidental damage protection plan. This turned out to be a saviour for me, else I would have had to buy a new phone and discard my OnePlus phone. For now, you can try taking it to a OnePlus repair centre and get it checked. But for future, please keep this in mind.
