OnePlus 3 or a Nexus 6P?

I have a Nexus 5x and just bought (but haven't received) a OnePlus 3. The 5x just has too much lag and stutters too much with basic things - things that my Nexus 5 (and even my Nexus 4) didn't seem to have problems with. The 6p is obviously a better performer than the 5x, but it's too big for me to want to keep. The OP3 may be too big as well, but here's how I decided that a non-Nexus would be OK for me:

Performance: The 5x just doens't perform well. The 6p is better, but the 810 isn't exactly new at this point, and it still has some serious thermal throttling issues. This is my overarching concern.
Screen: According to AnandTech, the 5x has a more accurate screen than the 6p, and the OP3 is considerably worse; however, when I see a photo on a friend's iPhone, I don't really care that the screen is much lower resolution. Color balance might tip it for me, though (though there, the 6p is better than the OP3 but not perfect.)
Build quality: 5x has essentially no real build quality other than 'it's plastic and doesn't fall apart.' By all reports, the 6p and OP3 both are well-made blocks of aluminum and glass.
Camera: The 5x/6p might have a technically better camera, but both are pretty good and will take pretty decent low-light photos. I've got a real camera with interchangable lenses if I really care about minute quality differences.
OS/Updates: I've only used stock Android on a Nexus for the past 5 years, but OP3 keeps it pretty close. OnePlus has been making the right noises about updates, but I don't know if they'll follow through, but what features are really on Android N that you're super excited about? Multiwindow is nice, but then you're going to be limited by the 6p's 810 and 3GB of RAM somewhat; I personally don't care about VR. Google has spent years ripping features out of the OS and putting them into apps that get updated via the Play Store - things like the Now launcher - and I really suspect that as much as a part of the nerd in me wants to be on Android N first, I won't really miss it for a few months.

The 5X software should have been corrected with updates a couple months ago - mine never had the issues, but I've only had it since April I think. The 810 in the Nexus 6P doesn't have the thermal throttling issues that the 1st gen 810 did in the HTC M9, etc. 5X has the most accurate LCD screen, 6P in sRGB mode is good, both are very similar for colors. Build quality I'd agree OP3 is most likely much better than the 5X. The OP3 isn't going to be a notably worse experience on these sorts of things, any of the differences are not going to be obvious to most users. What may be noticable is the proprietary charging thing that OP3 did instead of following the USB - C spec with PD - only the OP3 cables/block will work for fast charging and this makes it only slightly better than the HTC 10 on that front. I think that you're absolutely right that most people will be able to be perfectly happy with the OP3.

I had the Nexus 6P and sold it a few months ago. It was big, the screen was not very bright and I found the camera to be poor. I do miss ambient display. I think the OnePlus 3 screen is much better. I read the technical reviews of the screen and expected the worst. It is far from it. It is not as good as the S7 Edge, but it competes just fine with any of the other screens for everyday use.

This is my first OnePlus device and I am concerned about the comments regarding updates. I hope they do a better job than reported in the past. Having said that, I found that being the first to get updates is not always ideal. Google has broken a number of things with their updates and you have to wait for them to figure it out and fix it, which can be a couple of months. The LTE bug in MM was a prime example. The security updates are important, however, and I hope OnePlus keeps up with them.

If I had to chose between the two, I would chose the OnePlus 3 right now, but I have had it less than 24 hours. The devices have a lot of similarities. I will see how it goes, but so far, so good.

Just curious, did you have the sRGB mode enabled for the 6P? It's pretty surprising to see the OP3 screen (one of the worst) being said to be much better than the 6P screen (one of the best). The max brightness on the OP3 is almost halfway between the 5X and 6P. There is good news though, the OP crew did say that they intend to add an sRGB mode to their device via an OTA update. That should help quite a bit.

It has been several months since I had the 6P, so I do not recall the specifics. I do recall one of the reasons I was not using it was the display. At that time I would have been comparing it to Samsung and LG devices and it was not as good. I recall the brightness being an issue. I read the tech articles on the OnePlus 3, too, but the screen to me can be made very bright. I always had the 6P on its brightest setting and with other phones, including the OnePlus 3, that is not necessary. I obviously do not have the two to compare side-by-side and going by recollection may be flawed, but I can say that I have no qualms with the OnePlus 3 display.

Why is the screen on the op3 horrendous or even one of the worst? It looks great...even compared to my 6p.

Because the credible review sites say so. Did you read this?
Display Analysis - The OnePlus 3 Review
Actually many review sites say the same thing. Jason Howell says the same thing on this episode of All About Android:

I'm not sure how much more evidence you need...

There are just as many (maybe more) saying the screen is good, including the AC review. People should actually see it before they rush to judgment.

In my opinion, it's one of the best screens I've seen, regardless of 1080p or not. I think it's a fantastic screen.

the screen is way too saturated making skin tones orange and to top that the screen tends to have very strong blue cast. Obviously when compared to other screens. When not compared you won't notice. An update is on the way anyways. If it wasn't an issue oneplus wouldn't address it but since they are that means something.

My evidence is the phone being in my hand. Lol looks good to me.

Oh and the fact that the text is rendered less clearly than the iPhones-well, I'm able to read everything on the screen perfectly fine. My head doesn't hurt from how unclear it is...
Sure it's not gonna be as sharp as most other 1440p displays, or even some 1080p displays, but holy crap it's sad that something like this is even an "issue".

I'm just glad I'm one of the people that's enjoying the phone for the sum of all it's parts.

The thing is, lots of people have told me they can't tell the difference between SD TV and HD TV. I can. Just saying...

Not one is gonna have an issue with the screen. Most reviewers are comparing it to other flagships. Not everyone has 5 to 6 phones laying on his desk at all times.

It's an issue because my OP1 had a great screen. I don't think being able to make out what the text says is the measure. Sounds like you want to "Just Settle"...

I'm as critical of smartphones as anyone and, for me, the screen is beautiful and not a problem. The lack of automated do not disturb functionality, however, is another story.

Let's not worry about what I wanted, OK? I'm just saying what I see. As are others. If you wanted to know more about me, then we can set something up outside of the AC forums, no problems with that.

I had just noticed that was removed. Never used it, but I know that's pretty damn popular...hopefully they're able to work something out to include it with the toggle switch.

I am not one of those people. I have a 4K tv because I do care. I have had all of the Samsung, LG, Apple phones with all of the best screens. The OnePlus 3 screen is good.

You have no basis whatsoever for commenting on the screen. Just because you read some review (which I also read) does not give you the right to downplay the opinions of the people that actually have the device and can view the screen.

Let's revert to, "want what you like, buy what you want, love what you bought". Or something.
