OnePlus 3 or a Nexus 6P?

When it's all said and done, the only best phone there is; is one that fits your needs

Want what you like, buy what you want, love what you bought. If it gets any more complicated than that, you're doing it wrong.

I have a Nexus 6P and the Oneplus 3 is certainly a very interesting device, especially because of its cost. My main issues with the Oneplus 3 are:
  • what about updates? How fast will the Oneplus get the Android N release? I know they use cyanogen, but actually this is just a different branding for their OS skin.
  • The lack of stereo speakers is a bummer

People that do not have these concerns will probably like the Oneplus 3 a lot. In the meantime I am enjoying Android N on my Nexus 6P and my Pixel C :)

Yeah my main concern for the OP3 is going to be the software updates. I don't think they are using Cyanogen though - I believe OxygenOS is a stock-friendly OS built on Android Marshmallow?

I've put my money down for a OP3 after all - I'm really hoping it's as good as I think it's going to be, the bit that swung it was that I'm keen on powerful internals and small bezels, so hopefully will be able to do a little write-up once I have it! Moving from an S6 edge, looking forward to better battery life, the AC review suggests it should be quite a lot better.

Roll on the 27th!

Mine will be here tomorrow. I will put it through my normal daily routine which consists of a lot of screen on time to get a good feel for battery life. Will come back and post my findings here after the first full day of use with it followed by a report after a week once battery has cycled a few times.

I ordered one, but I'm not quite sure why...I have an S7 Edge and Nexus 6P I use on AT&T...I had been using the 6P since the gold model came out. I got the S7 Edge again 2 weeks ago for the microSD card slot. Not sure how the One Plus 3 fits in...I am probably going to cancel it today. I wish the HTC 10 had a camera as good as the S7 Edge and didn't blow out the brightness in low light situation, such as focusing on a TV picture in a dark room.
Can you give me your thoughts on the S7 Edge vs. Nexus 6P? I love the Nexus 6P and it's just a bit too big for me. I ordered the OP3 as well, primarily because it provides a large screen in a smaller package for a great price, with reported great performance. However, I'm worried about camera performance in advance. I've been toying with picking up an unlocked S7 Edge but am concerned about screen fragility and reports of the edge screen picking up unwanted touches. I tried the HTC 10 too and returned it within days for a variety of reasons. Thoughts?

I have the 6P, as much as I love the phone, its just too big for me as well. I tried the S7 Edge, and ended up hating the edges, and the way it felt in your hand, false touches, etc. I actually prefer the S7.

Unfortunately, while I find the Nexus 6P form factor is too large, I've become accustomed to the larger screen. One of the reasons that I returned the HTC 10 is that the screen isn't big enough for me. That would apply to an S7 as well.

I did order the OP3 as well as I miss the bigger screen. I found the G4 form factor perfect for me and hope the OP3 is close.

I too have been using the Nexus 6p from day one and love the phone. It's the best phone I have used, period. I did in fact order a oneplus 3 as well, for a few reasons. Mainly cause I love phones. I have wanted to try a oneplus phone since there original, but never felt like it was a complete package and was worth it. The oneplus 3 seems more so a complete package. I see it as a very similar device as the 6p, yet different enough to be compelling.
I will hold complete judgement until I've used it for a few days and report back, but I will say this: if the size isn't an issue, the Nexus 6p will NOT do you wrong. And I have this feeling that I'll think the same about the op3.

I've had the 6p for a few months now and I'm considering selling it for the OP3. I have large hands and the 6P is simply too large. My hands constantly ache from trying to use it with one hand. I love everything else about the phone, but it's just too big. I may go Moto Z as well.

For me, this isn't even a question. OnePlus 3. The 6P is way too big for my tastes. Not that the OnePlus is small device, though. But for the price, the 6P can't touch the OnePlus. Software updates are a concern, but I'd root the OnePlus, and flash whatever rom I wanted, so that's a non-issue for me. If you don't want to deal with rooting, and want guaranteed software updates, go with the Nexus. I have an iPhone SE on order, as I'm trying to get away from the ever growing size of Android devices, but I really want to get this phone. Maybe I'll pick one up next year if I decide the SE is too small for daily use.

I like the price and the spec but I'm vary about the software. My oneplus one has done me good, it still works like a champ but when it comes to syncing it with android auto, my oneplus one doesn't seem to like it and would disconnect even after following the instruction of going into developer option and setting USB option from charging to midi several time. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I luckily had a nexus 6p user around and his phone pair up with android auto without a problem.

So with the specs and price, it's good. But if you have android auto in your vehicle and would like to use it, i would avoid oneplus phones like myself, I'm waiting on the new nexus 6p or planning on getting the current 6p if nothing exciting comes out this year.

So I've only had the device for a few hours now, but I figured I'd give initial impressions.

The build is very similar to the Nexus 6p. The feel of the metal is pretty much exactly the same. It's a great feel, if only a little slippery. It's definitely lighter than the 6p, but has the right amount of heft for its size.

One note as I'm typing this, due to its thinness and tapered back that makes the sides of the phone thinner, it is a bit harder to hold onto while typing. (Just put on the thin case I ordered with it and it helps a bit) That being said, the phone feels great in hand. It's a lot more comfortable to hold than the 6p.

The software is smooth as silk. As expected, especially right out the box. I've loaded up all my usual apps and logged into everything, but obviously not as many things taking up space yet, so I'll hold complete judgement on that.
It does have a few more tweaks over stock Android, which is definitely nice. Can't go wrong with more options like gestures from screen off, swipe down on home screen for notifications, etc.

Now the screen....
To me, it's great. I'm not a screen expert, but it looks damn good. Don't worry about it being ONLY fhd. I personally think it tops the 6p in every way except for when you're looking for pixels an inch away from your face... Well duh!

Battery life and camera will have to update later. Positive so far. Photos look to be at LEAST on par with the 6p. Which is good, because I've had a great experience with that camera, both front and rear.

One of my favorites so far...THE FINGERPRINT SCANNER IS SO FREAKING QUICK!!! It's literally instantaneous. Which means yes, it is quicker than the 6p. MUCH quicker. And very accurate so far. I personally don't mind having it on the front or rear of phone. Both positions work fine for me, so that's personal preference.

One of my least favorites so far (knit picking here)...ram management. Yes it is true, they did compromise keeping more apps in memory for battery optimization. But so far it's only been noticeable if I tried pushing it. Compared to the 6p, they both keep chugging along just fine through normal use.

Speaker quality goes to the 6p, without a doubt. It's simply a more pleasing experience listening to the front facing speakers than just one bottom facing speaker on the op3.
That being said, that one speaker is still very good.

This phone, like I said in my first post, has given me the same great feeling as I have for the 6p. It's a whole package. It does everything it's set out to do and does it well. The 6p is still a top contender, but to me, so is the op3. There aren't as many shortcomings this time around.

I'll update this when I think of more stuff, and feel free to ask any questions if anyone is trying to decide still. Or just wants to know more about either device.

Edit: holy crap that's longer than I anticipated...hope this helps!

I have both.
While as a complete package the Nexus 6P is a better phone IMO yiu cannot go far wrong with the OnePlus 3.

If on a tight budget this is a more than capable device but you will find the Nexus 6P being updated more frequently and promptly especially after an OS upgrade.

However if you are prepared to ROOT your device CyanogenMOD have your back covered with the onePlus 3

This is my 2nd One Plus phone as I also have the original OnePlus 1

...and it's arrived!

That came much earlier than expected, so I'm happy with that. The quality of the phone is excellent, all the buttons feel great and satisfying to use.

The screen is bright and lovely to look at, I have no concerns there, 400PPI is just fine for me. Nice small bezels, so the phone is a great size for the screen that it's got. Far too early to give a proper review - it's been with me for an hour - but it's first impression is a good one. Packaging was great too. I bought the sandstone case for it, and it's nice and small, doesn't add much bulk to the phone at all - but now the phone has a great looking case and it comes with a factory-fit screen protector, it's all looking quite good at the moment!

I also got the sandstone case. Never been a huge fan of super thin cases that still expose a lot, but it fits perfectly, has a great feel, and IMO makes the profile of the phone a tad easier to hold.

I don't see why anyone would buy the 6p over the Oneplus 3 at this point in the cycle. The new Nexus phones are around the corner, the 32gb model of the 6p is 100$ more than the 64gb Oneplus, your getting double the ram with the Oneplus, the most up to date CPU available, a basically vanilla android that actually has features like dark mode and other customizations that you don't get with stock android. Also it comes fully bootloader unlocked so if you don't like Oxygen you can easily install anything you want. I understand current owners of the 6P are going to be biased, but dont swing non owners looking for the better phone at the moment the wrong way. The 6p is at the end of its cycle and the Oneplus 3 is not only current, but even more future proofed with the 6gb of ram.

The OP3 has a horrendously bad screen:

This is a deal breaker for me. I will keep my Nexus 6P.
