Only want contacts from one Google account displayed in Phone app

I have previously had to do something similar to the workarounds described (quickly go in and disable sync). Android and Google almost try to make the phone too smart for its own good (for my uses) by expecting you to always wanting to sync everything (emails, contacts/people, calendars, tasks) for any account you ever add. The default should really be not set for all those syncs. Having the default always initially set to sync after an account is added would work ok I guess for folks that don't need to have more than one service/account on the phone. I find its worse for when gmail accounts are added. When I do that I find the next time I go to the google search page in the browser it will almost always be auto signed in, and then I have to re-sign out.

I have two Google accounts on my phone.
My main account (account A) syncs everything. My second account (account B) doesn't sync contacts or people details.
In the Contacts app, it shows only the contacts from account A. Exactly how I want it.
In the Phone app, it shows contacts from accounts A and B.
I only want contacts from account A displayed in Phone app.
It's frustrating when the Phone app isn't using the same settings as the Contacts app.
I've removed account B, cleared the app data for the Contact and Phone apps, but the issue is still there after re-adding account B.
Any ideas?

Not trying to drag this up from the boneyard but I got my first Galaxy watch today. This issue seems so commonsensical it's not even funny. I'm trying to have my watch notify me for five or six contacts only without forcing my *phone* to go into do not disturb, or making yet another Google account. Everyone else can come into my phone notifications just fine, but I want only my favorites to notify me on my watch, independent of DnD. The now discontinued Misfit Hybrid smartwatch does this without any issue whatsoever. I can't believe that such a sophisticated longstanding operating system as Android, or a generations old watch like the Galaxy can't figure this out. I might be sending this one back. I wish there was a way to just add a few contacts manually and be done with it.

I had the same problem. Here is how I got around. First, remove the Google account that have the contacts that you do not need. If you go back to the Phone app, you won't see those contact anymore.
Now, add the Google account that you removed and real quick go to Accounts and Sync where you disable contact sync for the new account. You gotta be quick, because contact sync is enabled by default.
On my phone (or for me :) the contacts simply sync too quick. But I succeeded with a slightly adjusted way of working, using the Airplane mode.
  1. Phone Setting > Accounts > Manage accounts > Select your SECOND google account > "Remove account"
  2. Phone Settings > Accounts > Manage accounts > Turn Off Auto Sync
  3. Start re-establishing account. The last step is agreeing to the conditions. Don't agree yet.
  4. Make sure you have the phone settings app open on the Accounts > Manage accounts page. And practice quickly executing steps 7 to 11 (using an other account).
  5. Go to the Contacts app. Check and remember the number of contacts.
  6. Agree to the conditions (for re-establishing the account).
  7. Quickly: switch to 'Manage accounts' settings.
  8. Quickly: when the new account appears, click on it.
  9. Quickly: click on 'Account syncing'
  10. Quickly: click on the menu icon in the top right (of the settings app.)
  11. Quickly: click on 'Stop syncing'.
  12. Go to the Contacts app. Check if the number of contacts has not increased. If so, you did the above quick enough. Otherwise start again with step 1.
  13. Turn on Airplane Mode (so the next step won't mess things up.
  14. Phone Settings > Accounts > Manage accounts > Turn On Auto Sync. Reason: without autosync turned on, there is no option in 'Manage accounts' to turn off the contact syncing. (We will turn it off in step 16.)
  15. Phone Setting > Accounts > Manage accounts > Select your SECOND google account > Account syncing
  16. Turn the 'Contacts' slide off. (And the same for all other unwanted information.)
  17. Turn off Airplane Mode
  18. Go back to Phone Setting > Accounts > Manage accounts > Select your SECOND google account > Account syncing
  19. Probably some functionalities of the google account where not available in the sync list yet (GMail, etc). As soon as the network connection of your phone is connected again, it they will start to appear.
  20. If there are more you don't want to sync, turn them off too. It is no problem that you do this after they started syncing, because this data does seem to get whipped (or hidden?) from your phone once you turn synching off. These other functionalities don't have the same bug as the contact syncing has.
  21. Go the the contact app. Their might be 'Groups' synced from the second account (without contacts in it, because you turned syncing off quickly.) The syncing of the groups is so fast, that I can not prevent it.
  22. Remove all the groups you don't want.
In this way you still have to be quick to stop the contact syncing, but this was doable.

Hi, here is a fix for your issue that requires no signing out or other gimmicks.

1. Open the Contacts app.

2. Tap the three lines on the top of the page and go to Manage Contacts.

3. Enter into Sync Contacts page. Turn off sync for the accounts whose contacts you don't want on your device.

4. Exit the Contacts app and enter into the Settings app.

5. In your settings app, go to the Google page.

6. Enter into the account which you don't want the contacts from.

7. Scroll to the Backup and Restore area under which you should see a Google Contacts Sync button. Enter into that page.

8. Under the Status area, turn off Google Contacts Sync.

9. Exit the Settings app.

10. Go to the Information of the Phone app & the Contacts app, by long-pressing and clicking the small 'i' button.

12. For both the apps, go to the Storage section.

13. Under the storage section, tap Clear Data
for both the apps. Exit the Information pages after that's done.

14. Open the Phone & Contacts app to see if only the contacts from your desired account are appearing.

15. These steps can be repeated for each account individually, depending upon how many accounts' contacts you wish to remove from your app list.
