Op Ed: Google's Looming Pixel 4 disappointment

I keep wondering when consumers are going to push back in terms of the price point.
Yeah I remember thinking the the Blackberry Bold for $699 was a lot. Now I would gladly go back to those prices. $1000 for a phone...GEEEZZZ!!!!

People almost need to look at it this way: Drop $1,000 for a phone every 2 years. That's like buying a moderate gaming desktop every 2 years and getting rid of it. I mean, on a phone, sure some things force you to like the battery, but still. That's a lot of money.

You know we expect too much sometimes I think. I'm using a Pixel 2 XL while I wait for the 4 and it does not disappoint so I imagine the 4XL will not disappoint either.

We expect too much.
Sorry I have to disagree.
Google's phones are a yr behind with hardware.
And everything.
And they want to charge the same thing as the iphones.

They need to step up on the plate with the prices they charge.

Personally I've always gotten the value "I expected" from the Pixel phones. I've never felt they were selling hardware but software. I feel much more secure using a Pixel phone other than any other device.

To me Apple does in the main sell hardware, catching up in software when they can. Google sells software and they slowly catch up in hardware.

Just my opinion. I don't think hardware means as much today as it did a few years ago.

How a phone looks on the other hand is always going to be personal preference.

Regardless what the price, specs happy or not people will buy it and if not they not going out of business anytime soon.

Sorry
Regardless of what they sell.
When it has less memory than last yrs model did.
And it sells less storage than this yrs model has.
And they charge the same price.
There is a problem.

Pixel seems to live on whom gets the update 1st.

I'm not sure how to feel. I want to get this phone but at this point I am not sure how to feel. Why can't Google give us what we want. More and more average consumers are becoming aware of specs everyday. The camera on the Pixel is not enough to bring in consumers. Nothing else on this phone is mind blowing. If this phone came out in June then it wouldn't be as bad but the fact that we have to wait until October to be disappointed with what Google is about to show is really unfortunate. Is there anyone at Google that we can reach out to so we can provide feedback/criticism?

I agree. For the same price range others offer 3 vs 2 cameras, near bezel less display, and upper 3000 to over 4000mAh battery.

With the Pixel 4, I can accept the slim bezels (design was never Google’s strong point and nothing wrong with slim bezels) and the dual-camera setup (knowing Google’s processing) is bearable. To be fair they will be including some fancy tech in the Pixel 4 like the 90hz screen and 3D facial recognition.

However what is a massive shame/irritating is getting basic things like battery capacity wrong. No matter how you look at it, 2700mAh is downright unacceptable in 2019, especially to power such a hungry display. If the Pixel 4 would be costing (according to leaks) below $750 and 4 XL below $900 it would be acceptable. But since the price is probably going to be significantly higher with a adequate but disappointing 6/64GB configuration it already looks a but gloomy.

The 4a however, could do very well if Google gets it right.

The third camera, ok, I'll give that even though I think once the new feature smell wears off, the ultra wide camera madness will cool...I had a phone with a UW... Used it on occasion (less as time went on), and put it in the 'nice to have, but whatever if not' column.

And we really need to move past this bezel thing. There's a reason why there is a top bezel in the Pixel 4. It's jammed with hardware no other Android OEM has yet. REAL biometric facial recognition that uses two wide-set IR floods (Apple uses one) and an IR camera, a FFC (that is still the best stills FFC in the business), and the Soli radar chip that they're barely touched the surface on yet. All will eventually get hidden behind the display, but not yet. So the lack of a bezel-less is due to added hardware features that aren't available on any other Android phone.

As far as prices go, people are overlooking the true driving factor... The cost to develop all the software that is running all that hardware. All those engineers don't work cheap... And the most expensive phones have a LOT of engineers working on them. The Pixel 4 has a custom designed processing chip dedicated to imaging. How much do you think that cost?

You're starting to find multi camera rigs on even budget phones these days, but the quality still sucks... You're just getting mediocre pictures are different angles.

I agree with all you say. The cost of technology is high and that cost gets passed onto the customer. I am paying £916 for a 128GB XL and although it is expensive I am getting more technology for that money than the £750 I originally paid for a P2 XL.

If you could give me the drill specs to exactly where to drill .
I would drill and punch the sensor out for facial recognition.

I may not use my UW lens on my S10 that much, but I do use it and in times when I need it I do not have time to pull a lens out of my bag and put it on my phone to capture the shot.

Maybe these phones are Halo Devices, showing the world what the phones can do and not really about making the consumer happy.

Is that why they put such a small.battery in the 4?

If that's the case why am I seeing so many commercials. It just does not make sense. Everytime I feel I figure them out they do something to counter my thought.

We're talking close to a four or five holes and one sizable rectangle. It would be a farce.

My guess is that the general parameters we're set first.. Screen size, overall dimensions... The latter with an obvious goal to make both models the same thickness.

But a few hundred mah more battery would have not made any difference in cost anyhow.

By the way, I agree completely that the battery they put in the smaller one is much too small.
