I just purchased my 2014 Note 10.1 as my first android tablet so forgive me if this is an easy answer.

I've downloaded 2 Excel files in these formats: .xls and .xlsx. Polaris and QuickOffice have no issues opening the .xlsx file type, but neither can open the .xls format. Is there a way to move this document to my Google Drive to open it in Sheets or is there a way to get Polaris / QuickOffice to open the .XLS extension?

How are where were the files created. I create and use .xls files back and forth between my desktop Excel and my Note Polaris with no problem. Is it giving you an error?

I get this error "file type can not be recognized". I have a web-based application that I download this file from on the web. It's interesting that some of my files come out as .xlsx and are fine but all .xls wont work.

huh interesting. the web application is using an engine that differs from standard created .xls files. Can you control if it creates them in xls or xlsx?

have you tried using Kingsoft office? I like that office suite the best on the tablet

I can control it from my db but it's not an easy adjustment. I'll look into that.

Kingsoft opens the file and it displays html tables for every row.

I put the same file on my g drive and it opens fine. Just downloading on the tablet and opening through my apps doesn't.

So my question is how can I download directly to my g drive or Dropbox or how do I move the file once on my tablet.

Not totally understanding what you mean by how to move the file once on the tablet?

It looks like the web application is doing some kind of programatic dynamic creation of a file with asp, or jsp or some other web based programming output script and naming it .xls .It is probably actually outputting HTML which Excel itself will overlook and interpret it as excel data, but the tablet apps see it as HTML. Its a bit of a challenge for you Im sure, to get it to what you want. But Im sure there is an answer/solution somewhere ;). Can you create some generic file with this mechanism and post it here, and I , or someone else can play around with it?

ahh I don't see an attachment option for documents here. can you put it online and post url?
