Optimus F3: Disable text notifications?

I'm running Android 4.1.2. The text notification pop-up partially blocks my map when I'm driving and using GPS. It's difficult and dangerous to press the X while driving to make the pop-up go away, so I can see my map. Is there a way to disable text notifications? Pleeeease say yes. Thanks in advance.
