So I ran the speedtest.net app and got these results (averaged 5 tests on full bars of 3G) just outside of Denver.

Download: 492 kbps

Upload: 675 kbps

I am under the impression that the 3G downloads should be SIGNIFICANTLY faster. So is this an Optimus issue? A speednet app issue?

Any insight?

what gives you the impression that the speeds should be higher? I mean I would expect them to be higher than that, but does somebody else have a different phone that gets better results?

And some speedtest apps give wild results. Try the FCC speed test app and see what it says.

Based on the assertions of what 3G is capable of. I dont expect 100% of 2-3mbps, but i dont expect 20-30% of it either.

800-1000kbps isn't hard to imagine. That's average. You would need to confirm with someone else in your area what speeds they are seeing.

I'm planning to check this out at a RadioShack today. If they have a demo model available I'll try installing and running the Speed Test app.

I just got:
1025 kbps down
775 kbps up

That's on an Optimus S with 4 out of 6 bar signal strength.

Theres a widget called mobile signal widget that will give you your real signal strength in dbm. Full signal isn't always full signal. :)

True true. If anyone feels like taking a little read, give THIS a go.

More back to what iamlillysdad was saying though, cell phone signal is measured in dBm and the carrier or phone manufacturer can map those dBm's in any way they want. Two sprint phones side by side (different models) could have completely different signal bars on top although their true reception, dBm, is going to be very similar if not the exact same.

Cheers!

I also got about 1,200 down and 800 up averaged over 5 tests (at one point my upload reached over 1,000 on one of the tests. Neat!).

Could just be your area and/or server chosen.

You also have to take in consideration where you are at on the network and how many users are on the site at that time. I've seen great numbers at my house then later seen horrible numbers and I'm using a Rev A device like the Optimus.
